“Most awkward place you’ve checked your cell phone?” w/ Gary Vaynerchuk

What is the most awkward place you have ever checked your cell phone?

Be honest, the most productive time of your week is while you are sitting on the toilet. Everyone just fess up already! The average amount of time that the normal person spends sitting on the john has increased by at least 10x.

I send more email, reply to more tweets and read more articles while sitting on the toilet than at any other time of day. Since I bought my first iPhone in May 2009, the way I do things has completely changed. Some of those have been very good changes. Others…not so much.

The amount of time I spend talking to real people in real life has decreased. Real conversation is a lost art. It’s a shame really.

But how does that affect us as business people?Ā Drastically.

Instead of the good ole’ days when drivers used to pay attention to the road and occasionally look up at your billboard; we are now glued to our phone and occasionally look up to swerve back into our lane. Don’t believe me? Next time you are headed down the road look at 10 people you drive by and tell me if 5 of them don’t have a phone in their hand. Guaranteed.

What this means is that the most valuable real estate on the planet is no longer billboards or the TV, now it is your iPhone (or Android if you are so unfortunate).

The question you should be asking yourself is “How do I get there?”

How can your app, web page, ebook or podcast be THE thing I listen to when I’m sitting on the toilet? Answer that question, and you are in business.

Gary Vaynerchuk published an infographic recently that showed the rise of mobile and the crazzzy effects that it has had on our culture.

We’ve made it into a video. Enjoy šŸ™‚
