Build By Writing: How to Leave Your Readers Dumbfounded

Crazy thing happened last week.

My wife and I were starting to pack for our trip to Costa Rica when we realized my passport had expired – 2 months ago. Keep in mind we were 4 days from leaving.

If you have a passport, you know how long it can take to get one. Usually 4-12 weeks.

I had FOUR DAYS!

Long story short, I was able to pay a bunch of money and get it back less than 24 hours before our plane took off for the Caribbean.

Wayyyy too close for my comfort.

When I got my passport I looked at the picture and thought to myself, “Hmm…that’s a good picture.”

Ha!

Then I got out my other two passports and put them all side by side.

15 years of Bryan in 3 pictures.

Check it…

My first reaction was…”Yikes!”

1999 was rouuuuugh!

I was one weird looking kid. Still growing. Low confidence and pretty funny looking.

My business has follow the exact same curve.

My first blog post? Horrible.

My last blog post? Proud of it.

What does this have to do with anything?

Writing is THE keystone habit of building an online business. It affects everything.

  • If you want to make a video, you have to write a script.
  • If you want to create a course, you have to write the material.
  • If you want to build an app, you have to write a spec document.

On and on.

Everything starts with writing. If you can learn to write powerful content that grabs ahold of your reader and leaves them dumbfounded – you can grow. If not, you better be ready to spend some money to overcome your weakness.

How to write powerful content that blows away your readers

Step 1: Download Commit by Nathan Barry.

The turning point in my writing career was on January 8th, 2014. I was on an airplane from L.A. to Nashville reading Authority.

While reading I had a lightbulb moment.

“Write everyday for 6 months and you won’t struggle with writing anymore”

I used Nathan’s app Commit to help me do just that.

I committed to writing 250 words every day for the next 6 months.

Look at what happened…

I went from averaging 75 readers per blog post to averaging 2,000 readers per blog post.

Videofruit went from 230 email subscribers to 7,230 subscribers.

Monthly revenue went from $3,100 per month to over $15,000 per month.

ALL BECAUSE I WROTE EVERY DAY.

Want to build your business?

Step 1: Read Authority

Step 2: Write everyday

Step 3: Press ‘publish’ once a week

Step 4: Study excellent writers in other industries.

Do this everyday for the next 6 months and your life will change.

I’ve pressed publish 76 times over the last 10 months.

…and that’s the only difference in you and me.
