When I first started building my email list I was a civil engineer. I struggled when taking the exams required of civil engineers but pushed through and figured it out. After studying and learning, I had a lot of material and knew it could help others trying to pass their exams.
I also wasn’t happy at my job because it didn’t pay what I felt was deserved.
That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of helping civil engineers pass their exams.
Fast-forward 2 years and I’d built an email list of 1,348 subscribers.
I’ve now used my courses to help hundreds of civil engineers and have earned $55,774 in revenue.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. I created a lead magnet.
I learned that lead magnets are a great way to ask people to join my list because it gives them an incentive.
Intuitively I knew that my audience was looking for resources to help civil engineers pass one of the main exams called the PE exam.
This tactic steadily earned me my first 652 subscribers.
Currently my list is at 1,348 subscribers.
I went from 652 to 1,348 subscribers by doing one thing: I created a free 3-part video series.
Free 3-Part Video Series
I learned from my first lead magnet that people are more likely to join your list when you give them something that helps them instead of you offering nothing in return.
I launched the series in January of 2016 and it’s helped earn 696 total subscribers.
My first product I offered to my subscribers was an exam available at $24.95. I launched it without any advertising.
I now have 7 exams available and have earned $22,840 in total revenue.
I then created an entire PE exam review course and made it available to my email list subscribers.
Here’s how I launched it:
Step 1: Beta test. I did a test run to my list and pre-sold 15 copies at a discounted price. This helped me validate that this review course was needed and that people would be buy it.
Step 2: Build it out. Next I built out the course after validating it. I’ve had 80 people take it since launching in early 2016.
The course has generated over $32,934 and my goal is to reach 6 figures by the end of 2016.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Having an email list affords me more time with my family and allows me to experience and do more things in life that I never thought I would do. I would have never started an online business. I would have never met some great people.
An email list is the life-blood of a business and I know that my subscribers are the first people to go to when I release anything or need any advice.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on 3 things:
Wife + Twin Girls + 1 Dog
Civil Engineering FE & PE exams
Videofruit has given me the tools to explode my list in ways that I never knew existing. It helped me to realize and learn how others grow their list too, and when I've implemented the few techniques I've learned (of the many) I have seen improved subscribership, and we all know that more subs means more value provided and more value means more opportunities to make money doing what I love helping other people.
