When I first started building my list, I was working with one of the biggest companies in Norway as an SAP system administrator, earning six figures.
I wasn’t happy working for a big corporation, and after a near-death experience while paragliding in Turkey, I reviewed my life and decided it was time for some major changes.
That’s when I decided to create an email list around the topic of productivity and time management. It’s my passion, and I realized I could help a lot of people.
Fast-forward 2 years, and I now have a list of 3,566 subscribers! It took me a year to narrow down my niche and find my ideal customer. After that, my list building took off.
Since then, I’ve launched a coaching program that went from $0-$3,000 in 3 months and pre-launched a new product which made $6,000+ in sales.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing 1 thing.
Guest blogging. I would reach out to the blog owner or apply as a contributor to the website.
Here’s what that pitch looked like:
Eventually, I didn’t need to pitch anymore. Most of my guest blogging started coming from invites!
In my first 14 months of blogging, I was featured on 158 top blogs. I then had a backlink to my landing page in those posts, so potential subscribers could click on the link and head over to my site. This got me my first 100 subscribers.
Since then, my list has grown to just over 3,655 by focusing on 2 things: 1) round-up and list posts, and 2) pre-selling my course, Massive Exposure From Scratch.
Round-Up and List Posts
I was featured as an expert in 2 round-up posts which led to 1,600+ shares. I also created a list post, which brought in more subscribers and more shares. I decided to over-deliver in my round-up posts, and that led to being invited by blog owners as an expert. I always made sure to include a link back to my site. This has helped my list grow like crazy and I got some great traffic!
Here is what those round-up posts and list posts looked like:
Pre-Selling My Course
In December of 2015, I gave myself a new goal: add more 100 subscribers to my list in less than 5 days. I created a free opt-in, and told everyone that if we hit our 100 subscribers goal, I would create a free course for those who opted in.
To hit the 100 subscribers goal, I used something called the Birthday Technique.
This is how it worked: I used my own birthday to thank all the people who have helped me get to where I am so far. I did that in the format of a list post. I had a picture of each person, a backlink and a few lines of praise of how they’ve helped and how much I appreciate their work. I then reached out to each of those people I wrote about and let them know I had written about them, and thanked them personally in the email for their help.
Because of this post and technique, the 100 spots were filled in 8 hours.
I then asked everyone that opted in 2 specific questions and used these answers to help create the free course based on what they wanted.
At the end of the course, I gave them an opportunity to upgrade to my advanced course. In 3.5 months, This resulted in just over $6,000 in sales.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I’m so much happier now! I’m living my passion by helping others. That’s an awesome thing to be able to do!
What’s next for you?
I just finished week 2 of 6 of my course, Massive Exposure From Scratch
I am also going to start my high-end group coaching program soon.
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
1. I’m going to be selling Massive Exposure From Scratch through affiliates.
2. I’ll be starting my high-end coaching program soon.
3. I have some exciting joint venture projects coming up.

Videofruit is my go-to place when it comes to hustling like crazy to grow my email list. If my list growth is slow, I ask myself, "What Would Videofruit do now?" And then I start doing something new and crazy. And it usually works.
