When I first started building my email list, I owned a studio in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was teaching 30-50 students a week how to play guitar.
It occurred to me that I was only going to help a certain amount of people locally who were willing to pay to learn guitar. That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of guitar tutorials.
The reason I picked that was because I loved teaching people how to play the guitar and empowering them to think big and dream, even if that dream was just to play for themselves.
Fast-forward 17 months and I’ve now built an email list of 1,005 subscribers, and it’s rapidly growing.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. I created an e-book called Guitar Hacks.
This e-book was made by me interviewing a dozen of the best people online in different areas of guitar expertise. After creating the e-book, I gave it away on my blog. In the blog post, I linked to every contributor and asked each of them to share it with their tribe.
Here is what the e-book looked like:
Currently my list is at 1,005 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,005 subscribers by using giveaways.
I chose to host a giveaway of a Martin guitar that retails for $1299. It fit the criteria I was aiming for of being: 1) highly desirable; 2) shocking; and 3) an authoritative brand in my industry.
Here’s what my giveaway looked like:
I sent emails, Facebook messages, texts, and did everything short of shouting from a mountaintop to promote this giveaway to as many qualified people as I could.
To stay at the top of people’s minds, I emailed my list on the first day and the last day of the giveaway. I promoted it on all of my social media outlets. And then I waited.
Here’s a screenshot of one of the emails I sent out:
Here’s an example of how people shared my guitar giveaway on Twitter:

It was fun to watch the progress on ListGoal and see my numbers climb daily, especially on the last day. When the giveaway was over, I took one last look at my ListGoal and saw 1035 subscribers were on my list.
After reaching this milestone, I think I am going to start creating my first program. Check back regularly on my site for more details.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Building an email list has allowed me to come into contact with some of my favorite musicians who I would have never felt comfortable approaching in any other context. I’ve had the opportunity to interview some of the brightest and most talented people I know.
On a personal level, building an email list is bringing me that much closer to my ultimate goal, which is to truly love and support my family in a way that allows them to pour into others confidently. It’s the reason I get out of bed each day. My wonderful wife and spectacular children are so supportive of what I do and they give me the time to achieve these goals.
I’m not where I want to be just yet, but I am on a clear and precise course. It is only a matter of time and will to stay the course.
What’s next for you?
I am starting to focus my efforts on creating my first guitar course.
It will focus on beginners who are wanting to learn how to play quickly and will focus on the “fun in FUNdamentals.”
Moving forward means focusing on 3 things:
Married + 1 Daughter + Twin Boys
