When I first started building my email list, I was an industrial engineer for GE and Walt Disney World.
I became a stay-at-home mom and needed an outlet for my passion.
I am super technical, so a lifestyle blog doesn’t fit me well. I love teaching others and I was used to writing SOPs (standard operating procedures) when I worked at GE, so I decided to write online SOPs in the form of how-to articles.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of helping moms have time to start online businesses.
Fast-forward one year and I had built an email list of 6,500 subscribers.
So far, I’ve made over $30k between my e-book and course!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: offering an opt-in on my site!
In January, I launched StartaMomBlog.com with my first opt-in as an offer to feature my readers on my site.
If they signed up for my list, I promised to place a link back to their blog from my site with a short paragraph and picture of them. This worked well and grew my list to 100.
I closed it because I didn’t want to link back to too many bloggers on the post.
Currently my list is at 6,500 email subscribers.
I grew from 100 to 6,500 by doing one thing: 1) opt-ins.
I offered an amazing opt-in and landing page and shared it on a large Facebook group. This was HUGE, as it got me exposure to everyone on that Facebook group.
This brought me up to over 1,000 subscribers!
I added an opt-in to my sales page…
And I added one to each of my popular posts.
All of these opt-ins have been hugely successful.
In terms of revenue and products, I have launched a few things.
I created and launched my e-book in June.
I made $1,000 in the first month and my list size was not huge.
I created my course in August and launched it in September. That month I made over $5,000. I added the course to the same sales page as the e-book. Customers have the choice of the e-book, the course, or a combo.
I still need to publish November, where I made over $9,000. The big boost was due to a Black Friday special I ran, and I only sent 3 emails about it to my list. I really didn’t even prep them for it, which I should have done!
I also published my Black Friday sale on Facebook:
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Ah, I love my email list! I spend half of my time nurturing my list (answering emails) and the other half improving my blog.
My email funnels through ConvertKit bring me sales while I sleep. It’s a dream come true.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
Me + Husband + 2 daughters
Industrial Engineer for GE and Walt Disney World
Initially when I stumbled upon Videofruit's website through Pat Flynn's podcasts I thought, who is this sleepy cute guy? What can Videofruit tell me? But turns out they're brilliant! I love all of Videofruit's unique strategies to building your email list and finding ways to monetize it. Their upbeat humor and happy personality drew me to them and I kept opening all of their emails. They're gurus at building and nurturing a list - they feel like friends in my inbox - not another person trying to sell something to me. Thanks Videofruit!!
