When I first started building my list, I was working as a pricing analyst for an energy company.
3 years ago I published and marketed 3 books on Amazon, and I immediately saw how hard it was for authors to know what to do, do it quickly and get back to writing.
That’s when I decided to start building an email list around book marketing for authors. I set out to create tools and services that make it easier on authors to promote their books, syndicate their promotions and get reviews for their books.
Fast-forward 2.5 years and I’d built a list of 8,071 subscribers.
I also am generating $10,000 a month with all our products we have available for our authors!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: reaching out to people one on one.
From August 2013 to December 2013, I reached out on a one-on-one basis with authors to try to understand the pain, struggles and frustrations that they were having.
During this time I was listening to my audience for what I could create as an opt-in offer that would allow me to start to growing my email list.
So, after listening, engaging and connecting, I created that first offer.
I then let that group of authors know about the free guide to help them with their book marketing online.
Currently my list is at 8,071.
I went from 100 to 8,071 subscribers by doing three things: 1) launching a podcast, 2) creating another free offer, and 3) creating a guest blogging program.
In the same month that I hit 100 subscribers, I launched a podcast that helped me go from 100 subscribers to 1,000 in 7 months.
At the end of each podcast, I let the audience know that the podcast was sponsored by Book Marketing Tools and they could get my free guide as a download.
In September 2014 I did a couple things to further grow my list.
After sending an email to further understand the frustrations authors were having, I created another free offer based on their response. My goal was to listen and provide something for them.
This is the email I sent:
Guest Blogging Program
I noticed that some of the growth from my list was coming from organic searches, so I realized that if I could increase organic searches, I would likely see further list growth.
That’s when I started the User Generated Guest Blogging Program.
In order for someone to get this email, I don’t send it to just anyone who joins my list. The main qualification, aside from submitting great content, is that they have been on my list for the last 6 months. I’ve now sent this email out 3 times and as my list has grown, so has the amount of USG content being submitted.
Here’s that email:
Since my list was full of authors, I knew that giving them a chance to share their marketing tips and advice would allow them to share my growing platform, increase the SEO rankings and ultimately increase my list.
It worked, and over 640 subscribers have been added to my list as a result of organic searches.
I’ve also launched a few products!
I use a systematic approach in selling my products and services:
1. My e-book opt-in offers and new offers are tied directly to a product/service.
For example, I just released a new e-book opt in, How to Leverage the Power of Free & Bargain Book Promotions Effectively, which not only adds subscribers to my list, but funnels them to a special offer to my Book Promotion Syndication Tool.
2. Every other week, I send out a promotional email to my list focusing on the value of one of my 3 products. This rotation doesn’t burn out my list, nor does it have me pushing any one product over the others.
3. In my weekly emails, I use a 6-1-1 rule for marketing to authors.
6 emails will be of value, giving tips, advice and tactics to help authors learn how to build their list and sell more books. 1 email will seek to connect with authors via a question asked, invitation to blog with me, or connect on social media. The last email in the 6-1-1 will be a soft right hook toward one of my products, but I make sure to add value in the email as well.
The above approach allows me to make sure I am never ignoring a product, not forgetting to promote a product, and regularly giving my audience a chance to support what I am building.
Currently I’m generating $10,000/month.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It has allowed me to create something from nothing in a very narrow niche of online book marketing for authors.
I can’t tell you how exciting it is to be able to think up an idea, send the idea to a list of engaged authors, produce the product and then have them buy into it! So cool!
I’m also starting to travel more and that’s been something I’ve wanted to do since I started online businesses!
What’s next for you?
I’ll be spending all of my time focused on three things:
10ksubs is more than a list building course. It is a life-changing tool that allows those who apply what they learn to create the lifestyle and business they have always wanted. Videofruit gives practical, actionable and current advice around what's working and not working to build your list. Highly recommend!
