When I first started building my list, I was homeschooling while running an online shop selling imported German books.
I got tired of selling books and wanted to talk about other topics besides just literacy in German. Also, dealing with a physical product had a lot of challenges that I no longer have to deal with. I had a lot to say and I needed a platform to say it on. 🙂 So I started blogging about homemaking.
I had published some blog posts about decluttering that were very popular with my readers. I had obviously struck a nerve and knew that this was a huge pain point for my audience.
That’s when I decided to jump into this with both feet!
Fast-forward 2.5 yrs and I’d built a list of 19,553 subscribers.
I launched a book called Step-by-Step Decluttering to my list in April 2016 (about $5k revenue during the launch, including about $1k of affiliate sales). Last month I launched a series of products called Feed Your Family Fast (cookbook, meal planner and additional resources) which have brought in $3500 so far (no affiliates this time).
How did you do it?
I honestly can’t remember how I got my first 100 subscribers! I wish I could remember 🙂
I put up a form (no lead magnet) and limped along one sub at a time until I created my first lead magnet in early 2015.
My first lead magnet was a one-page printable called “10 easy ways to start organizing (even when you don’t feel like it).”
I put up an opt-in form in my sidebar and a landing page on my blog.
In the summer of 2016, I also added a welcome mat that offers this lead magnet. This lead magnet has basically been unchanged since I first launched it in 2014.
To date, it’s responsible for 2,200 subs.
I added a few more lead magnets which collected some subs, but the real breakthrough came when I wrote a post called “How to grocery shop once a month (with free printable workbook).”
The workbook is the lead magnet and people are crazy to get it!
Here’s the opt-in on my page:
I also created a graphic that has gone semi-viral on Pinterest and has been pinned 16k time since May 2016.
This lead magnet has brought me over 5k subs and continues to do so. Now I’m running FB ads to this post at a cost of about 15 cents to 20 cents a lead, which is growing my list 2-3 times as quickly as before.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Having a list has allowed me to connect with SO MANY people. I find it hugely fulfilling to receive email from these women telling me how much I’ve helped them and how much I mean to them. From a business perspective, the revenue from the list (most of my revenue is directly tied to my list) has allowed me to hire some help and free up loads of time.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Me + 4 boys + Dog
Organizing and homemaking
Homeschooling + selling books
The information provided on the Videofruit blog is the most in-depth resource I've found in terms of launches and list-building. I refer people to Videofruit all the time! I feel like Videofruit holds nothing back on their blog and in their emails and I'm so grateful for all the knowledge they share!
