When I first started building my list, I was already blogging about making films, but doing it for someone else. I’ve always loved filmmaking, so I decided to branch out on my own and create the web’s best filmmaking newsletter.
This means that I go out of my way every single week to curate useful stories and tutorials, great short films, inspirational quotes, and plenty more.
Fast-forward 4 months, and I have been able to build an email list of 2,402 subscribers.
Now I’m on the verge of launching my first product!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by telling my friends to visit my site and by using the SumoMe Welcome Mat to collect leads.
The Welcome Mat creates a full-screen call-to-action when people first arrive at your site. Depending on how good your offer is, it’s definitely possible to get incredible conversion rates with it.
I’m hovering around 7% and have captured 3,337 using the Welcome Mat alone:
Here’s what my Welcome Mat looks like:
Then I went from 100 to 2,402 email subscribers by doing 2 things: 1) offering a premium newsletter, and 2) placing opt-in forms in each post.
My goal is to publish the web’s best filmmaking newsletter and something my audience is excited to open each Sunday. Every week I search high and low to find relevant stories, short films quotes and more to put inside of my newsletters.
Here’s an example of what my weekly newsletter looks like:
It’s critical that you give your visitors multiple opportunities to sign up for your list.
That’s why I leverage the Welcome Mat, an optimized home page, and opt-in forms on each page.
Here’s my homepage:
Maybe someone visits my homepage who isn’t used to signing up for an email list. They may read an article and really like it, get to the bottom of the post and want more, and then they see a form and sign up.
Here’s what the bottom of each post on my site looks like:
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It’s changed my life because it’s allowed me to connect with people all over the world and show up in their inbox periodically with stuff I know they’ll love.
It’s been invaluable for customer research and for building relationships with my readers.
What’s next for you?
Next up is a paid membership community built on Slack where filmmakers can come for one-on-one mentorship, constructive feedback on scripts and films, and a fun community that’s genuinely invested in the success of its members.
It’s launching in the first two weeks of July.
I’ll be spending all of my time focused on two things:
Me + Cameras
About to launch!
Before I started my list, I had no idea what my audience wanted or really cared about. But through the weekly newsletter and interacting directly with the list, I’m on the verge of launching a valuable membership community that never would have been possible without hearing directly from my audience.
