When I first started building my email list, I was working for the Department of Sport and Recreation in the Northern Territory, Australia.
I found that the sports weren’t getting the professional support they needed to grow. Despite the opportunities available and the passion volunteers bring to sport, too many people were leaving frustrated and burned out.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of supporting sporting club administrators and coaches.
Fast-forward one year and I had built an email list of 360 subscribers.
So far, my products and consulting have brought in $85,000 in revenue!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: asking my previous contacts to join my list!
This got me 130 email subscribers.
Currently my list is at 360.
I went from 130 to 360 email subscribers by doing 3 things: 1) blogging, 2) offering a free e-book, and 3) hosting workshops.
I started my new website a few months ago. I started blogging regularly on it, offering free information to my email subscribers that I knew would be helpful to them.
At the top of each blog post, I installed a banner that asks for email addresses.
On the homepage of my website, I offer a free e-book in exchange for an email address.
This has been HUGE in helping me grow my subscribers.
I began hosting workshops a few months ago.
I knew that workshops were a great way to grow your subscriber list, and that those subscribers would be people who were extremely interested in what I was doing and teaching.
In terms of revenue and products sold, I’ve made $85k this year!
The $85K has last year has been through mainly consulting work for clients such as sports administrators and coaches (the two target groups in the courses).
These are mainly volunteers in our sporting clubs who sometimes lack the skills to either build their clubs strategically or coach kids or adults. It has been through this consulting work that has enabled me to learn what the sporting clubs truly need in order to be successful.
Through this knowledge, I have then built the content. I have also produced a lot of templates and information from doing this work that I can now share with my audience.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Personal: It has given me flexibility in how I spend my day. For example, it allows me to drop off or pick up my son at school.
Business: It’s provided me with the opportunity to get my knowledge and experience out to a wider audience, rather than just to those people I can mentor and consult with one on one.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
Wife + Son + Dog
Teacher and Sports Administrator
I have been following Videofruit for the last 12 months. Their emails are the only ones that I read every single one of from the many business mentors that I follow. They provide simple-to-follow advice on building an online business from someone who has done it, made mistakes and come out the other side. I am part of their Slingshot crew and enjoy the way it makes me think about building my online business.
