She went from 0 to 1,857 subscribers and helps Chinese people learn English
HOW LONG IT TOOK
START LIST SIZE?
When I first started building my list, I was teaching English at a private institute for adults in China.
I wanted greater earning potential than just a basic salary and have more free time to be able to work from anywhere in the world.
That’s when I decided to build an email list to help Chinese people learn English.
I chose this because it’s something I have experience and interest in and the market is huge in China.
Fast-forward 27 days and I had built an email list of 1,857 subscribers.
The positive feedback I’ve been getting from subscribers to my list has now given me the confidence to start planning my first product that I hope to launch by the end of 2016.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing 1 thing. I went to my friends and family and asked them to join.
First, I went to my parents and boyfriend and they happily said “Yes, add me,” and I had my first 4 subscribers. I was off to the races 🙂
Then I asked my friends and family to join and share my posts. When you start with your personal network, you build a base of supporters and fans who will be with you to the end.
Here’s an example of a conversation in which I asked a friend to help me by sharing my project:
Currently my list is at 1,857 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,857 subscribers by doing 2 things: 1) social networking, and 2) podcasting.
I discovered a mobile app with which people can practice their pronunciation for free called “英语流利说”. I started posting tips for learning English on this app and soon had added 75 subscribers to my list.
I would also share the link to my blog so people could view my posts and subscribe that way. Unfortunately, I can’t link back to my blog on My English Salon but I made sure to mention my list and tell everyone I come across in the app about it.
I’ve added a total of 1,238 subscribers following this method.
I noticed that a lot of really successful blogs in my industry have their own official podcast channels so I started working on my own.
I reached out to the company that makes and manages the app, 英语流利说, to see if they felt my podcast would be a fit for their audience and they responded with enthusiasm.
At the moment I’ve been making new posts almost daily on my podcast and I have over 2,500 subscribers to my channel. My show brings me an average of 40 new subscribers to my list for every new podcast episode.
Having a list of excited subscribers creates valuable feedback for your content and product ideas. I’ve only had my list for about a month now, but the insights my audience has already given me have been incredible.
I’m now planning my first product which will launch by the end of the year.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I can already see the long-term impact of having an email list and I’m excited for what’s to come.
At the moment my list and podcast have caused me to be busier than ever, but I have the confidence to stay consistent and to eventually launch my first product.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on 3 things:
Me + Boyfriend
Launching a product soon!
Videofruit showed me to the importance of building a list as the first step to creating a successful blog. Since my audience (Chinese People) don’t read blogs, I took the strategies laid out by Videofruit and applied them to build a list of subscribers on the popular Chinese app WeChat.
