When I first started building my email list, I was a musical theater performer, jazz singer and vocal coach. I had built a career and I wanted to share my knowledge of the business of being a live performer.
That’s when I decided to build an email list about business tutorials for show business professionals.
The reason I picked that was because I’d built a thriving vocal coaching business, but most professional and university programs overlook how to run a business as a performer.
Turns out performance coaching is badly needed in that industry 🙂
Fast-forward 3 years and I’ve built an email list of 1,811 subscribers.
I recently launched my first course and I booked 4 new clients for monthly coaching.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing 1 thing. I went through my contacts and asked people if they’d like to be on my list.
I got 200 subscribers from just my personal contacts from doing performances or teaching classes.
Here’s what I sent them:
I also posted in Facebook groups. When people commented, I’d add them to my list! (With their permission, of course!)
Here’s what I posted:
Currently my list is at 1,811 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,811 subscribers by doing three things: 1) launched e-books, 2) built a Facebook Group and, 3) used Facebook Live.
Since starting my email list I’ve created and launched 3 e-books.
e-book #1: “6 Steps to Acting with Less Effort”
The content of this e-book formed the basis of my coaching with my vocal students. It’s a system that’s created results for my students when they follow the steps, but it didn’t really speak to a problem that my audience knew they were experiencing.
This book has led to 78 subscribers

e-book #2: “5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence Today”
I then asked my audience what they were struggling with and found many of my subscribers didn’t have the confidence to create a performance career on their own, so I wrote this e-book.
It’s brought in a total of 349 subscribers.

e-book #3: “10 Monologues From Published Plays”
In April of 2016, I added a specific opt-in on my most visited page, which is about audition monologues and how they work.
It’s not even a blog post but it’s clearly a hot-button subject for performers. I compiled a list of 10 free monologues and also included acting tips.
This e-book has brought in 182 subscribers.
I created a Facebook Group called Camera Confidence Course. It teaches confidence, speaking and performance techniques, and the technical side of live video.
My Facebook Group has brought in 111 subscribers to date.

I started using Facebook Live right when it came out and immediately saw it as a great way to interact with my audience. Over time it’s become one of my top assets.
My list began asking me how to use it so I put together a Facebook Live checklist and had 149 people opt in.
I’ve since launched a monthly Facebook Live course, Camera Confidence: Build Your Audience and Boost Your Sales using Facebook Live, and earned $3,528 total. The course covers confidence, speaking skills, branding, knowing your business, and the tech side of Facebook Live.
My students are already getting results in growing their audience and connecting with customers with the help of the course.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Getting clients isn’t the easiest thing in the world but I’ve found having a list is helpful. As you take action toward growing your list… you are also furthering your relationship with your potential clients and adding amazing value, which only makes them more eager to purchase all the awesome you have to offer.
I’ve booked 4 personal clients at $997 a month since starting to focus on building my email list. I’ve also filled my vocal teaching roster (12-20 students a week at $90 an hour) and sold out a monthly broadway themed open mic night bringing in about $300 a month thanks to building my list.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:

Performance Coaching for Business Owners
I'm am in LOVE with Videofruit’s teaching methods so, I know I'm not only gaining list building techniques, but it's helped me in my own courses and the way I run things with my clients.
