When I first started building my email list, I was working as an emergency dispatcher for the the police department.
I discovered The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss and started reading during my 12-hour shifts. It quickly changed my views, but I couldn’t implement what Tim taught in the book because there was no way to work 911 dispatch remotely!
Then I hit a wall when a man committed suicide while on the phone with me. I wanted to break free and get into something where I felt I was really helping people instead of trying to mitigate damages in emergencies.
That’s when I decided to build an email list to help change how we approach our health in the modern age.
Fast-forward two months and I’d built a list of 1,012 subscribers.
I am now building my first product in the form of a course.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing.
I asked friends and family to join my list.
Here’s an example of what I sent out:
“Hey Jake! I’m starting a new project including a monthly Complementary Healing newsletter. I think you would really enjoy it. Want me to send it to you?”
After reaching out, I only got about 65 people in this initial stage, so I quickly put together a targeted giveaway. My first giveaway brought in another 468 subscribers!
I used the targeted giveaway strategy to bring people to my list who were interested in my offerings.
It’s easy with giveaways to think that an iPad or Amazon gift card will build your list but that’s only half true. If you want to build a quality list with the right people then you must offer prizes that attract your crowd.
That’s why I decided to give away a crystal singing bowl!
Currently my list is at 1,012 subscribers.
I went from 533 to 1,012 subscribers by doing one thing: webinars
I’ve only been building my list for two months as of this writing (early December 2016) but I got the chance to run my first webinar.
Here’s a screenshot of my registration page for my webinar:
Here’s a screenshot of my results:
Webinars have added a total of 436 subscribers to my email list.
I’m excited to be doing a trial run of a product I’ve been working on for my audience. I’m building a course that will help anyone interested learn enough practical knowledge in 8 weeks to create a complementary wellness coaching business.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I have legitimate hope that I will be making enough by next summer to allow my fiancé to stop working his J.O.B.
I’m finally feeling like I’m working toward something positive that will actually make a difference in people’s lives 🙂
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Getting Married December 2016!
Product Coming Soon!
Getting into Videofruit was what finally pushed my business into reality. Getting focused on building an email list helped propel my ideas into actionable items. Now I'm seeing progress and am looking forward to where this is taking me.
