When I first started building my email list, I was working full-time as an SAP/ABAP developer for companies like Nestlé, Allianz, Nike, Coca Cola, ESPRIT, BASF, and KPMG.
Even though it was a well-paid job, I felt it was not for me.
That’s when I decided to build a list around the topic of developing and programing.
Fast-forward three months and I’d built a list of 1,450 subscribers.
I recently validated my first product. More details below!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. I created a launch team.
One of my advantages is knowing a lot of people from my 10+ years of voluntary activities.
I also knew that more than 90+% of my friends aren’t interested at all in programming topics, but they’re willing to spread the word about my project to their friends.
So I decided to create my launch team. Since I knew I couldn’t ask them to share my technical blog posts, instead I told them to share something which could possibly help their friends or friends of their friends.
That thing is free training for beginners in SAP/ABAP programming.
How I approached them:
Step #1: I directly asked them to help me share my project , which led to 116 subs.
Step #2: I used the LOL (Learn Out Loud) approach on my personal blog. I already had a few subscribers to my personal blog, and I decided to share my activities about online entrepreneurship in a “reality show” series, and once in a while ask some of my launch team members to share my activities
This earned me a total of 183 subscribers.
I then got 100 more subscribers by asking my launch team to share my free training with their friends on social networks, mainly via Facebook and LinkedIn
In total I earned 345 subscribers in my first month (September 2016).
Currently my list is at 1,450 subscribers.
I went from 1990 to 1,450 subscribers by doing two things: 1) sharing my blog posts on social media, and 2) free trainings with exclusive content.
I immediately began writing down ideas for posts I could create and started writing them.
Every time I wrapped up another post, I shared it with my friends on Facebook.
Soon strangers were coming and sharing my posts.
Here’s a screenshot of the social share buttons on my site:
This has earned me a total of 199 subscribers in October 2016 alone.
Free Trainings & Exclusive Content
I leveraged free training sites like Udemy and EnlightMe to post educational material for programmers and developers.
Although these sites don’t allow you to collect emails, you can post helpful resources that pertain to the training.
This sparked traffic to my site which allowed me to leverage content upgrades to offer exclusive content once they visited my sites.
From the moment when students landed on my website for additional content, I did the most I could to give them reasons to stay on my page and give me their contact info.
Here’s a screenshot of what my website visitors see when they read my content:
I was able to earn a total of 915 new subs with this method in November 2016 alone.
Right now I am legally able to sell my training due to international legal restrictions.
However, I am able to receive up to 500 EUR without any law issues so I decided to validate my business idea using the strategy from Videofruit.
I have chosen 5 active contacts and provided to them my paid product in discount price of 199 EUR.
Here were the results:
I know those are not valid number and I can’t expect such high conversion rate, but still looks very promising that people are willing to pay for my services.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Building my email list and audience has brought me encouragement and joy in all I do.
In business I went from the “hope” marketing approach to a much more effective way of approaching people and serving them, first creating a relationship with them to be able to offer them paid services later on.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Wife + 2 Kids + 3 Pigs ;)
