When we first started building our email list we were budding entrepreneurs. We had an idea for an app to provide analytics for events and created a strategy to help with events, startups, and companies. Manuel was working on a project he’s still actively running called EventNinja.
That’s when we decided to build an email list around the topic of viral growth.
The reason we picked that was because our ideal customer (someone who would find our app useful) would be interested in making their ideas spread rapidly.
Fast-forward 7 months and we’d built an email list of 5,504 subscribers.
We launched in January 2016 and celebrated our “1,000,000 emails generated with Maître” milestone after 5 months.
How did you do it?
We got our first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. We posted our project on Product Hunt.
Being on Product Hunt has earned us a total of 4,290 subscribers to date.
Product Hunt is a great place for exposure if you plan and execute. After we created version 1.0 of Maître, here’s what we did:
Step #1: Created a landing page. This helped us create a place for people who were curious about our app to find out more by joining our list.
This is our very simple landing page:
Step #2: Leveraged our connections. Our friend Ed Moyse introduced us to a moderator from Product Hunt named Eric Willis. Eric took a look at Maître and wanted to feature us after experiencing it.
If you’re looking to use Product Hunt, you can find moderators on Twitter, via email, or even in public Slack groups. This can be essential because other “Hunters” follow these influencers.
Step #3: Got hunted. Maître was hunted and posted at 8 AM London time, which gave us crucial upvotes before the US wake-up time, so we were already trending by that point.
We made sure our landing page was optimized for Product Hunters as they like to be treated specially. It featured a welcome mat with the Product Hunt logo and offered a discount.
You can see our Product Hunt page here
Step 4: Network outreach. Once Maître was hunted, we downloaded our email list from LinkedIn and emailed our early beta testers to say we had been hunted. This gave us some early traction.
By the end of the day we’d ended up the most upvoted tech-product on Product Hunt. This led to up to $1,000 worth of sales and 417 emails across our users and waiting list.
Currently our list is at 5,504 subscribers.
Betalist is a place where you search for and find upcoming startups. It made sense for us to join because many Betalist users are interested in growing their startup and our company provides that help. This has brought in a total 44 subs.
While asking our personal friends and family has only added 41 subscribers to our list it’s an easy thing to forget. Sometimes the people closest to you don’t know that they can easily support you by join your list so we always make it a point to ask family and friends to subscribe.
Twitter is great because the search function allows you to find people who’ve recently tweeted about what you’re looking for.
In our case we would search Twitter for the term “launched” and reply to each tweet. Twitter users get notified of our reply and have the chance to visit our profile and see what we’re about.
This gained us 712 subscribers.
Here’s an example of our Twitter outreach:
What has building an email list changed in your lives and allowed you to do?
Building an email list has given us the confidence to know that we have built a value proposition people are interested in. Without an email list, we would be taking a shot in the dark and potentially creating something that the market does not want.
