When I first started building my list I was running a non-profit Christian camp, Holler Ministries.
I shut down that camp because it just wasn’t paying the bills.
That’s when I decided to create an email list around the topic of sustainable farming. I picked sustainable farming because it’s my life’s passion. It’s changing my life in a positive way, and can have a huge impact on the earth.
So I just started.
Fast-forward 30 days and my list had blown up from 7 to 715 subscribers. At the same time, I launched a Kickstarter for a documentary film on sustainable farming that I had always dreamed of creating. It crushed it!
The Kickstarter for our documentary did $35,048 in sales.
Since then (February 2015) we’ve gone on to launch multiple other products and average over $10,000 in revenue per month–all from our email list.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things.
First, I invited people on Facebook to join my list. This got me my first 7 subscribers.
Second, we launched the Kickstarter and used a LeadBox™ in the campaign to collect email addresses.
Here is what it looked like on the Kickstarter page:
This produced 715 new subscribers throughout the course of the Kickstarter campaign. In addition to that, we had 1,099 people back our campaign, which added that many more subscribers to our list.
In total, by the end of the 30-day Kickstarter campaign, our list had grown from 7 subscribers to 1,821 subscribers.
Since them my list has grown to just over 20,000 subscribers by focusing on two things: 1) affiliate launches; and 2) switching from blogging to vlogging.
I simply vlog what we do everyday. It’s BLOWING up (at 3,000 views for each video in the first 24 hours). And the conversion rate is crazy. This has been the one platform where people actually notice (and miss me) if I disappear.
We post 5 days a week right now (soon to be 7), but during those two days off, we’ll get emails and messages asking if we’re ok and how’s everything going. Also, I went to a conference and complete strangers were coming up to me and saying, “We love the videos.”
We have become part of people’s daily coffee or bedtime routine. (No joke.) Towards the end of the month we’re going to start vlogging our 100-day challenge to grow all our own food. We hope to build a course and our audience during that process and launch that course in the fall.
We do an affiliate launch every 2-3 months where we get other people in our space to email for our free videos series (which grows our list). The first time we did this was November of last year and we added 6,000 new subscribers to our list.
This has been the most consistent list-growth strategy we’ve used.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It’s FREEING us from debt and allowing me to pay the bills. Having a list and online business also allows me the freedom to work about 20 hours a week (so I can spend time on the farm and with the family).
Also, a very pleasant surprise is that my audience has become like family. They have sent me supplements, they have repaired my baby carrier and they encourage us.
What’s next for you?
We’re spending all of our time focused on three things:
It’s a lot of fun!
Wife + 4 Kids
Non-Profit Youth Camp
I was born an entrepreneur, but it’s when Bryan Harris taught me the value of an email list (and how to build that list) that I found financial stability and freedom in pursuing my passion.
