When I first started building my email list, I was teaching SEO to people. I still do that and love it!
I had been taking on clients for a while and teaching them SEO, but I figured there had to be an easier way to reach even more people. I read Videofruit’s post about their initial $220k launch and I thought, “Hmm, this list-building stuff must REALLY work.”
That’s when I decided to start building my email list around the topic of SEO. It’s the topic I’m most knowledgeable about. I also felt that there were only a handful of great SEO blogs, and that even those could be better, so I decided to start my own with the intention of creating the BEST SEO blog in the world.
Fast-forward 23 days and I had built my list from 0 to 1,023 subscribers.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: blogger outreach for my link-building strategies post.
The post is basically one big content upgrade. It drives people to download a PDF that I offered. EVERY subscriber came from this one content upgrade.
Here’s a picture of the offer:
This went live on September 6th and I started promoting it to influential bloggers in the SEO space immediately via email outreach. I found that getting bloggers with huge followings on Twitter to share the post brought a huge spike in traffic and thus subscribers.
Some of the biggest names in the SEO space tweeted the post, including Brian Dean. He has almost 40k followers, so this was HUGE for me!
This strategy got me my first 300 subscribers within 2 days.
Currently, my list is at 1,023 subscribers.
I went from 300 to 1,023 subscribers by doing 2 things: 1) blogger outreach, and 2) promoting on Facebook and Reddit.
This was a continuation of how I got my first 300 subscribers. I continued reaching out to bloggers and promoting to them.
Promoting on Facebook and Reddit
I found SEO-related Facebook groups and started posting my link-building strategies post. I saw a ton of traffic from this.
As you can see, I had over 1,100 visitors from FB alone, and these converted to subs at 13%+, bringing 144 subs.
I also posted in the /r/entrepreneur Reddit thread, but I didn’t just link to my post. I made sure to add value right off the bat by writing a custom post.
This got a ton of upvotes and drove a ton of traffic and subs.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Personal: It’s given me a lot more confidence in my writing and ideas. (This is something I’ve struggled with a lot in the past.)
Business: I’ve had people from my list asking how much I charge for consulting and I even landed a writing gig for a HUGE site via my list.

Videofruit made me realize the importance of building a list. I read a lot of VF posts including their $220k+ launch and their tutorial on pre-selling and these two posts really persuaded me to focus 100%.
