When I first started building my email list I had just turned 30 and was a university teacher. I loved my job but couldn’t handle “the system.”
On March 17th, 2016 I decided to start building an email list around the topic of building mobile applications.
The reason I picked that was because being a teacher taught me that the best way to learn something was to teach it, so I started to talk about my progress, problems, and the fixes I found along the way.
Fast-forward 8 months and I’ve built a list of 1,009 subscribers.
I offered my first “tiny” product for $10 and earned my first $500 in August 2016.
In September 2016 I wrote an e-book and launched a beta version of it, which earned $2,000.
Now I’m focused on launching my coaching program to a small segment of my audience.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things. I wrote and published one article per week and shared it on social media.
Initially I was writing how-to and opinion articles for my site, but I found my groove when I switched to publishing in-depth articles. There was no real strategy at first besides writing and then sharing on social media.
Currently my list is at 1,009 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,009 subscribers by doing two things: 1) offering an email course, and 2) writing in-depth articles.
Growing my list felt like a long process until I decided to offer something free for signing up for my email list.
Because my audience is looking for help with very specific mobile development information, I decided to offer a course on two mobile app platforms.
My email list wouldn’t be where it’s at if I wasn’t writing in-depth articles every week.
I’ve noticed that the longer I publish consistent articles, the more traffic I get to my website.
I started getting more traffic after following some SEO advice I received from the Videofruit newsletter.
Here’s what traffic has looked like over the past seven months in 2016:
I started selling products by testing small offerings with my list. Most recently I started writing an e-book, in September 2016.
When I started writing the third chapter I released it to my list as a 1.0 beta project and earned $300.
On October 31st I officially launched my book to 900 people and earned $2,000 in revenue while everyone was out for Halloween.
As of November 5th, 2016 it’s earned $3,500 and growing.
Now I will be focused on offering coaching services to my customers and other email subscribers.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Before building my email list, I almost lost my apartment. My first big development project came from one of my email subscribers who hired me to develop an app for them.
I was able to get my apartment back and am now enjoying it with my family.
Nowadays companies who turned me away call me, asking if I’m available to work with them 🙂
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on 3 things:
Wife + 5 Yr Old Son
I was doing things the hard way before I started following Videofruit, and a couple of months after :P But in the past 3 months my business has seen amazing growth because I stopped questioning if what they were saying was going to work for me, and just started executing. Right now I'm my own boss, I can spend the entire day playing with my son or going to the movies with my wife and still make 6X what I was making as a college teacher. So yeah, you could say that Videofruit changed my life :) A little side note, I'm in South America, so when I close a 2K/mo I'm at the top 1% in the country :P
