When I first started building my list I was a full-time CPA, working with anyone who called.
That was a nightmare because I had to help everyone from Aunt Betty to the local coffee shop, and it’s impossible to do a great job with such wide-ranging clients.
That’s when I decided to create an email list around the topic of helping dentists save money on taxes and worry less about the business side of their operation. I chose dentists because I already had a few as clients and I enjoyed working with them.
Fast-forward 6 months and I had gone from no list at all to having 3,532 email subscribers, launching a podcast and generating over $15,000 in sales.
How did you do it?
Since then my list has grown to over 3,500 subscribers by focusing on two things: 1) consistently offering content upgrades; and 2) Text Message Calls-To-Action.
Text Message Calls-To-Action:
About a year ago I decided to launch a podcast, called Start Your Dental Practice, to attract dentists who were fresh out of school and looking to buy or start a practice.
In each episode of “Start Your Dental Practice,” I make it as easy as possible to download a bonus I offer with every episode.
A lot of people listen to podcasts in their cars. So I decided it would be helpful for anyone listening to text a simple word (mine is “Practice”) to an easy-to-remember number (33444) from their mobile phone.
To date, I’ve collected 111 email subscribers who have texted in their email addresses.
I noticed “content upgrades” as an effective way to capture email addresses, and no one was doing it in my industry. So I started adding them to every post, and they’ve since become a key part of the podcast.
Each post that goes up on Dentist Metrics also comes with a content upgrade, like this one here.
While it can sometimes take longer to create in-depth content like this, it’s well worth the time investment. Just using content upgrades alone, I’ve added over 2,700 emails to my list.
It’s relived a lot of the pressure that comes with a service-based business of always hunting for clients, because now they come to me. On top of that, I’m excited to start offering new products (starting with the Ambitious Dentist Mastermind) to my list.
Tax season is still incredibly busy, but it’s great getting to enjoy more time with my wife and kids and not stressing about “that next lead.”
What’s next for you?
It’s a lot of staying consistent, which means:
Wife + 2 kids
After starting my business I didn't really know where to start in order to gain traction. I'm now three years in and I couldn't imagine having the success I have now without Bryan's help.
