When I first started building my email list, I owned and operated a home inspection business. I wanted the flexibility to do business from any location and a way to help my wife quit her full-time job.
I’ve always been passionate about personal growth and self-development so I decided to build an email list around the topic.
Fast-forward 9 months and I’ve built an email list of 1,090 subscribers.
I’m now starting to plan out the products I’ll offer my list!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing 1 thing. I reached out to my friends and family and asked them to join.
If you’re just starting an email list or haven’t talked to your friends and family about your list, then this is a solid approach.
My plan was to simply check in on my closest relationships and let them know I’d love their support if they would join my email list.
Here’s an example script of how I reached out to my network:
Me: “Hey Bryan, how’s everything been in your world?”
Bryan: “Still running Videofruit and loving it! You?”
Me: “That’s great. I’m always telling my friends about your site, if any other ways I can help let me know! I’m starting a newsletter where I give personal and self-growth advice. Would love your support!”
Bryan: “Thanks 🙂 That’s cool, of course”
Me: “What’s email should I put down?”
Bryan: “email@example.com is best”
Me: “Sweet, thanks a ton!”
Currently my list is at 1,090 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,090 subscribers by doing two things: 1) contacting my Facebook friends, and 2) contacting my LinkedIn connections.
The instinct on any social media platform is to post about your email list and expect people to come running to join your list, but that just doesn’t work. People are busy so you must message them directly.
I used the exact same script with my Facebook contacts as I did with my personal network.
Using this method, I gained 775 subscribers.
After I tackled Facebook I decided to go after LinkedIn. While I’m not even through my entire contact list yet, I’ve already gained 190 email subscribers.
I expect to gain at least another 100 email subscribers from this LinkedIn strategy.
I haven’t sold anything to my list yet, but I’m starting to figure it out and I’m excited to be at this stage.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I never would have thought this, but having an email list gives me access into other people’s lives in an amazing way. It means the world to me that I’m able to help people with my knowledge, and email has been a great way to grow my relationship with subscribers.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on 3 things:
Wife + 3 Daughters +Two Dogs
Owned A Home Inspection Business
Creating A Product Soon!
I always knew that I needed to create another revenue stream that wasn't dependent on me trading hours for dollars and that could allow me to do business from anywhere in the world. Doing business on my blog allows me to impact others while also making a living from anywhere. Videofruit has shown me the way to do this.
