When I first started building my email list, I was (and still am) a full-time financial planner. I love financial planning: It will always have a place in my heart.
But I have a goal and strong desire to help the masses. My blog has been my outlet for that for many years, but I know the next phase is creating courses to help more people. Along the way, financial advisors from all across the U.S. have contacted me, wanting to pick my brain on how I’ve achieved such amazing success with online marketing for my financial planning company.
That’s when I decided to create an email list around the topic of financial planning and specifically focus on helping other certified financial planners.
Fast-forward 6 months and my email list of financial planners has grown from 0 subscribers to 1,143 subscribers. I also created and started selling my first online course, Online Advisor Growth Formula, and it has generated $39,953 in sales!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by emailing my existing email list of 25,000 readers. I asked if any of them were financial advisors and if they were interested in a training program I was considering creating about online marketing.
This might sound like a major advantage, and in some regards it is, but this yielded just 184 subscribers (out of a list of 25,000).

Since them my list has grown to just over 1,143 subscribers by focusing on one two main things: 1) Facebook ads, and 2) joint webinars.
Facebook Ads to a Lead Magnet
One of the first things I did to start growing from 100 to 1,000+ was to set up Facebook ads to advertise a lead magnet I had.

This worked really well and brought in just over 500 new email subscribers.
Then I taught them really high-value information and pitched my course at the end.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Building an email list has had so many amazing results. The most recent is offering my course to financial advisors and they truly find tremendous value. The revenue achieved gives us even more financial freedom and we’re excited to start giving back to charities and other philanthropic interests.

I’m in the process of forming a few partnerships that will really grow the list even more. Plus, instead of doing the “one webinar per month” model, we want to do an open and closed launch strategy and do 2 big launches per year.
