When I first started building my email list I was still at the marketing agency I’m a part of.
I set the goal to replace my full-time income from a new business based on something I’m passionate about. I love my job but am looking for more from life.
That’s when I decided to build an email list about the how to be profitable in the stock market.
The reason I picked that was because I’ve always been interested in stocks and figured that I could use this blog to document my journey.
Fast-forward 14 months and I built a list of 1,910 subscribers.
I made my first $8,592 recently from affiliate marketing and will be creating a product of my very own soon!
How did you do it?
Here’s how I got my first 100 subscribers:
The first thing I did was launch my website.
Since I was determined to grow my list from day one I launched the site and created a variety of sign-up forms and pop-ups to capture email addresses.
I know pop-ups can be annoying for visitors… but they work!
Here’s a screenshot of one of mine:
Currently my list is at 1,910 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,910 subscribers by doing two things: 1) paid traffic and, 2) writing and promoting blog posts.
I found an advertising partner that was able to drive cheap traffic to my landing pages for as low as .3¢ per click! This is when my list-building really took off in late 2015 and I was getting upwards of 10-20 subscribers per day.
This lasted for a few months, however in February 2015 I realized they had over-billed me and the traffic they were sending seemed to be lower and lower quality. My big mistake was that I became reliant on this one traffic source and so when I eventually gave up on it I was almost back at square one.
Here’s a screenshot showing some of my results from paid traffic:
Luckily though, my list had grown by just over 1,000 subscribers by this point.
Writing & Promoting
I doubled-down on longer form content on my site because I saw that Google was sending traffic to higher-quality pages with in-depth content. So I blogged feverishly and have since written many 2,500+ word blog posts that are attracting eyeballs on an ongoing basis.
Here’s an example of one of my posts:
I also realized from reading Neil Patel’s stuff that I needed to be doing more marketing of my content. So I combined my long-form articles with the skyscraper technique from Brian Dean at Backlinko and started reaching out to the people I linked to in the articles. This has helped me get more promotion and has led to some nice big spikes in subscribers when other influencers tweet my articles or link to it.
Here’s what my SEO traffic has looked like for my most popular post:
Although I haven’t launched my first product, revenue from affiliate commissions have totaled $8,592 from the last 12 months. I’m excited to shift my focus to a product.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I love waking up and seeing new email subscribers. It’s just so exciting to know that I’m helping people even while I sleep! It’s so cool, especially because this all stems from a personal interest. It’s very fulfilling for me to not only spend my time exploring an interest, but learning that I can help others do the same.
I’m also encouraged to keep doing this because I know the success I’ve had isn’t by accident. So I want to continue to growing my list and in 2017 I plan to replace most of m full-time income with only income.
My motivation for this is because I actually want to be a bit of a stay-at-home dad. My wife is very career-focused and I want to have the opportunity to really support her and our future kids by being available – however I also want to keep earning income in a way that’s fulfilling.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Me + Wife
Stock Market Education
Videofruit really opened my eyes to a few key things. First, strategically I really appreciated their laser-focus on setting a list-building goal and how that kept me focused. Then there were some big tactical things that made a real difference for me. Number 1 was the upside-down home page. My bounce rate has been cut in half since doing that and I get a lot more subscribers from cold website traffic. Thanks Videofruit!
