When I first started building my list, I was a 1-on-1 coach at my business, Action Jackson Fitness. I still work there!
I was working 70- to 80-hour workweeks and getting completely burned out.
That’s when I decided to start building my email list. I realized having subscribers would eventually lead me to selling products, which would in turn lead me to working fewer hours and getting some of my life back.
Fast-forward 9 months and I had built my list from 50 to 2,080 subscribers.
Since then, I have been focusing on growing my list organically to get higher-quality subscribers. I also started working with a social media and content strategy consultant to help me build my Instagram following. Instagram is extremely powerful for the fitness industry, unlike many other industries, and many internet fitness celebrities have launched coaching programs, info products, and even affiliate sales through Instagram followers alone and have been very successful. Plus, by building my Instagram following, I can bring more traffic to my website and hence build my email list.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing.
I asked my friends and family to join my list by texting and emailing. This was HUGE in the beginning for getting momentum going.
This strategy helped me go from 50 subscribers to 110.
I then decided to start doing giveaways. I did 3 different ones and gained quite a few subscribers from each.
I ended up with a total of 3,190 new subscribers from those giveaways.
The downside was the quality of subscriber was not very high, and as a result, I had a fair portion of new subscribers fall off or simply go cold and not open emails. I’ve retained roughly 23% of the subscribers from each giveaway in the months since and I’ve pruned my “cold subscribers” twice to keep my open rates up and to avoid paying for subscribers who aren’t opening my emails.
Since then I’ve pruned my list to 2,080 really great, quality subscribers.
I’ve also seen a huge uptick in my in-person business in the last 6 months due to the amount of content I produced during my coaching with Videofruit. Almost all of my prospects who walk in to see me have already read my blog and are practically already sold on training once they walk in. The blog has really helped.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It’s made in-person sales much easier and helped me generate far more leads, but honestly my life hasn’t changed as much I thought it would.
This is mostly because I still don’t have a product so I’m still working crazy hours. I still don’t have much leverage. Online training didn’t afford me as much leverage as I wanted so I’ve down-shifted on it and I’m focusing on my in-person clients while I create my info product.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
The blog is outrageously helpful IF you can manage to execute which is always the hard part. Videofruit can tell you step by step what to do but if you don't do it -- none of that matters. Working with Videofruit was great, but without all the blog content... I'm not sure if I would have gotten as much out of it. It was the blog that walked me through everything we talked about in step by step detail. It was paying Videofruit for accountability that helped me actually execute. It's the same reason people pay me... for accountability and support.
