When I first started online, I was working in my day job as a productivity consultant helping companies operate more efficiently, but traveling cross-country 5 days a week took a toll on me.
I started exploring how to apply technology to my family hotel business and teaching myself how to code on nights and weekends, which led to building my first web app.
I wanted to get out of the corporate world and found that many companies were having trouble getting more customers, which was something I had learned about and was implementing on my web app.
That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of growth marketing.
Fast-forward 30 days and I had built an email list of 1,500 subscribers and had my first successful product launch where I made $15, 375 by teaching people what I learned along the way.
How did you do it?
I got my first 200 subscribers by doing one thing: answering questions about growth marketing on Quora.
My goal was to answer two questions a day. I quickly noticed that certain Quora users were getting extraordinary results so I started studying what worked.
Here’s my Quora account:
Once I figured out how to get better results, my views skyrocketed to over 1 million views in just 45 days.
I went on to publish my first product, “Quora Domination,” so that others could easily learn what works on Quora.
Currently my email list has 1,524 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,631 email subscribers by doing one thing: virtual summits.
After I mastered Quora, I noticed that users were getting incredible results on SlideShare.
One of the people I found who was crushing it on SlideShare was Eugene Cheng. I decided to reach out to him to see if he’d be interested in partnering together on a SlideShare event.
Here’s the exact message I sent to Eugene before we knew each other:
Here’s a portion of our registration page:
Following the summit, attendees had the opportunity to purchase a step-by-step course on SlideShare. This worked well because our summit attendees were ready to get started with SlideShare, and our experts were incentivized to share our summit to receive an affiliate commission from anyone who bought from their lists.
One of the guests we featured emailed their list of 15,000 about the summit, which resulted in a nice bump of subscribers for our list and attendees for the summit.
We’re excited about our launch sales numbers for Slides That Sell which did $15,375 in total revenue.
Here’s a screenshot of gross sales before the launch wrapped up:
Here’s how the numbers worked out:

What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I can’t tell you how awesome it is to wake up on some days to hundreds of opt-ins and additional sales.
I left my day job so that I could control my time and money, and I’m excited to be living that vision now.
What’s next for you?
I’ll be spending all of my time focused on two things:
When I left my day job as a productivity consultant, I wanted freedom to work where I want and when I want. Building my email list and creating products has made that vision come true.
