When I first started building my email list, I was a healthcare consultant managing projects that implemented electronic health records.
I realized I had unhealthy habits that I wanted to change and started noticing what worked and what didn’t as I began forming new habits. I realized that the system that I had created and was following could help more people. That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of habit formation.
Fast-forward 4 months and I had built an email list of 2,886 subscribers.
I’m now in the middle of rolling out my first product and loving the process!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. I announced to my friends via Facebook and email that my blog was coming.
That announcement brought me my first 52 subscribers, and my next 50 came from my friends sharing my posts on social media.
Currently my list is at 2,886 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 2,886 subscribers by doing two things: 1) content upgrades, and 2) sharing my posts.
Every week I post a new blog entry where I show readers exactly how to make effective habits.
I read that content upgrades were a great way to help my audience while building my email list, and since then I’ve included a content upgrade with each post.
Some of my content upgrades are for my free email course, like this one:
Other posts feature an upgrade specific to the post the audience is reading. Here’s an example:
My best performing content upgrade to date is my free e-book “Avoiding The Traps: 10 Habit Mistakes Newbies Need to Avoid.”
Between my free email course and e-book, I’ve gained 1,276 subscribers.
Having a blog with fresh content is great, but having new people visit your site to read your posts is even better. That’s why I always pay attention to the sites my readers tell me they visit and spend time on so that I can post my content there.
After I create my blog post and content upgrade, I share it on those sites to start the conversation and attract new readers to my blog.
Here’s an example of how I share my blog posts on Reddit:
I answer a few questions on Quora every evening to help build my authority on topics like habits, willpower, productivity, and procrastination.
My answers on Quora have been seen over 1 million times!
I most recently launched my first product, called “Habits 101,” to my email list.
I know how hard change can be, so I’ve laid out what to do step-by-step if you want to make habits that stick.
Habits 101 is a 10-part video course that will help you create and sustain new habits for life through guided videos and printable resources.
I’m just starting to roll it out and I’m excited to check back in to report on progress!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
The most personal thing that building a list has given me is self-confidence. I had some concerns about whether or not people would understand “habit formation” and see the value of it. Seeing my list grow shows me that people are looking for this.
As a business, it’s given me the opportunity to do something I’m interested in and do it for a living. It sounds cliché, but when you do something you love, it doesn’t feel like work.
It’s amazing seeing subscribers share their goals and their challenges with me and I get to work on solutions to help them. It’s very fulfilling.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on 2 things:
Releasing Product Soon!
I always knew that building a mailing list was key to an online business. How are you going to share your voice if there's no one around to hear you? The problem is, there is so much noise out there about how to create the mailing list. No one has put together a process that actually works for the "little guys". At least not until Bryan and Videofruit came around. It's absolutely been invaluable how Videofruit has given me the tools and steps to take to grow my list. It's been awesome!
