When I first started building my email list I was a full-time speaker. I traveled all around the country, talking to high school and college students.
That might sound fun, but in reality it was a grind. Being away from your family 4 nights out of the week and never sleeping in your own bed. Not fun. I loved speaking, but having 100% of my income relying on it felt like a job.
Not like the fun thing I had set out to do.
That’s why I decided to start building my email list around helping other people learn how to get booked and paid to speak. I chose that topic because that was something I was an expert on and thought I could legitimately help people do. However, unlike me, I would show them how to do it without running themselves into the ground.
So I started doing just that in March of 2015.
Fast-forward 9 months later and my list had grown from 0 to nearly 30,000 subscribers and my number of speaking engagements fell from 8 per month to 2 per month (which meant more time at home with my wife and 3 girls).
In the nine months since starting my list, we created a course on getting booked and paid to speak, helped over 500 students get their first gig and sold $250,090 in courses.
It’s been nuts!
Just in the first few months of 2016 we’ve brought in another $300,000 in revenue from the course.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by putting a sign-up form at the events I would speak at.
We picked up several hundred email subscribers in a month just by doing that.
Since them my list has grown to 29,000+ subscribers by focusing on two things: 1) Webinars on other people’s lists; and 2) Facebook ads.
Webinars on other people’s list
Basically, I keep my eyes out for anyone who has a substantial audience of speakers or aspiring speakers. Once I identify someone I’ll approach them and ask them if they’d like to host a webinar.
If they say yes, they’ll send out a few emails to their list inviting them to the live webinar.
Then I’ll present 30 to 45 minutes of solid material on getting booked and paid to speak. And at the very end I’ll invited them to enroll into my course.
This produced 8,000 new subscribers in 2015.
Our Facebook Ad strategy is very similar to the webinar strategy, but instead of hosting the webinar on someone else’s list, we run ads to cold traffic on Facebook to get people to sign up for the webinar.
Here is an example of one of our ads…
This works extremely well.
The toughest part is getting the targeting right on the ads, but after fiddling around with it over the last 9 months we’ve gotten it down to a science.
We routinely spend $500 per day and turn that into $1,500.
This strategy accounted for just over 20,000 subscribers for us.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It’s given me my time back, allowing me to cut back on travel and speaking and be home with my family more. I regularly take my girls on daddy dates during the week and am just around more often.
Now I’m building a business that scales and isn’t reliant on me trading time for dollars.
What’s next for you?
Doing more of what works. Seriously, don’t always be looking for a “next” thing. Sometimes the next thing is just getting better at what you are already doing. 🙂
