When I first started building my email list, I was a marketing executive at startups like Squarespace and SumAll.
I was pretty miserable working in marketing. I accidentally discovered that design and helping people turn their spaces into awesome homes they loved were actually the things that excited me the most.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of interior design hacks and vintage shopping.
Fast-forward 13 months and I’d built an email list of 1,019 subscribers.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: adding a simple sign-up form on my site.
Here’s what that looks like on my site:
When you click “Hook Me Up,” this screen pops up:
This got me my first 100 subscribers.
Currently my email list is at 1,019.
I went from 100 to 1,019 by doing one thing: utilizing Instagram.
The majority of my list growth has come from Instagram!
My main technique is that I offer a freebie called “my secret online shopping sources.” This is where I offer up all the places online where I like to shop to find the best vintage items.
Then I post something on Instagram that I found from one of these sources.
I often use text in my caption that describes how I found this item for next to nothing, but now it’s listed on eBay for X amount of dollars.
Then I tell people that if they want the list of sources, they should click the link in my profile and sign up to get it.
Here is an example:
When you click the link in my profile, you are taken here.
On that page, there are 2 different places to sign up to be a VIP for the new course I’m creating now!
This strategy has helped me so much in growing my list!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
While I haven’t yet started selling my course, it’s allowed me to build and connect with my audience in a crazy-fun way.
Even when I send out emails that don’t include a “hit reply” line, I always end up hearing back from people in my community, and they tend to be the most excited and connected to whatever I’m doing.
I’ve also realized that emails are my fave type of content to create… way more fun for me than blog posts. My emails help me feel like I’m just sending a fun note to a friend, and I feel like they are the best reflection of my personality and the things that I love the most.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
Me + Husband + Dog

A year ago, the idea of leaving my cushy full-time job to build a career I love working for myself seemed crazy...and scary...and panic inducing. Creating an online course seemed equally crazy. But after discovering Videofruit, I realized that building my own community was actually something I could focus on and, more importantly, needed to focus on if I wanted to build a successful online business. I definitely have not done this as quickly as some others have, but I've continued to steadily build my list and expand my audience in a way that has blown me away. I'm now working hard on my first course, and I'm super duper excited to launch it and get it out to the world.
