When I first started building my email list, I was a journalist.
I’d always had a passion for empowering young girls and being a journalist wasn’t fulfilling that in the way I wanted. I wanted more freedom, and I wanted the ability to write for young girls and help them through life.
That’s when I decided to build an email list to empower young girls.
Fast-forward 13 months and I’d built a list of 30,154 subscribers.
I went on to create a book that became the most crowd-funded of all time.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things.
First, I reached out to friends and family and asked them to join my list. Most of my friends and family were so supportive, so this helped grow my list so much. It also gave me the encouragement to keep pushing forward.
Second, I installed a welcome mat on my website. I’ve recently changed out welcome mats (the new one is for the book we recently finished), but this helped my subscriber count, big time.
Here’s the current welcome mat:
Currently my list is at 30,154 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 30,154 subscribers by doing three things: 1) blogging, 2) offering giveaways, and 3) a Kickstarter campaign.
I started blogging and sending out a different piece of content to my email list every week. I focused my blogging on empowering young girls and telling stories of awesome women to inspire!
At the bottom of the blog post, I would offer even more great content.
When that was clicked, it would bring up a pop up where I asked for their email in exchange for the content.
This helped grow my list so much.
I offered 3 different giveaways to add more subscribers to my list. The giveaways all revolved around female empowerment, important women in our world, and women who have made real change.
I posted these on my Facebook group. They were shared by members of the group as well. This brought in a TON of subscribers.
I got the idea to write a girls’ bedtime story about awesome, inspiring women. It’s called Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. It’s a children’s book that reinvents fairy tales, inspiring girls with the stories of 100 great women from Elizabeth I to Serena Williams.
I launched the project April 27, 2016 on Kickstarter. Within 24 hours, the book was 80% funded. From there, the numbers just went crazy. Over the course of one month, I successfully raised $675,614 with 13,454 backers.
I’ve continued to sell the book, so revenue is now at $1.3M and growing!
I am so excited about this project. The first rounds of shipments have started going out to everyone! It’s exciting to watch this project come to life.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I was able to pivot my business and raise $1.3M via crowdfunding.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Me + Partner
I was lost. My business was struggling and I had completely lost focus and motivation. Videofruit helped me reconnect with my "why" and gave me the confidence to keep going and keep trying one more time. Now I have a profitable business that will generate over $1.5M in sales by the end of the year.
