When I first started building my email list, I was a business and finance strategist at a startup. I ran into a guy named Benji Hyam and we started talking about ways big companies could use content marketing to get leads.
He had skills with growing traffic and I had skills with converting that traffic.
That’s when we decided to build an email list around the topic of growing online traffic and converting it into leads and sales.
Fast-forward 10 months and we’d built an email list of 3,472 subscribers.
We recently launched our first product and earned $6,750.
How did you do it?
We got our first 100 subscribers by doing one thing. We announced our idea and we created a public challenge for ourselves to reach 40,000 unique visitors to our site in 6 months and a 5,000-person email list.
This was our call to action at the bottom of the post:
Currently our list is at 3,472 subscribers.
We went from 100 to 3,472 subscribers by doing two things: 1) content upgrades, and 2) site-wide calls to action.
Every one of our posts comes with a content upgrade. This works for us because we publish in-depth articles about content marketing and our visitors want to implement our advice.
We make it easy for them by providing a download they can save for later use.
Here’s an example of one of our most popular content upgrades:

Calls to Action
If you want your website visitors to take action and join your email list, then you must provide more ways for them to join.
For example, if someone lands on your homepage and doesn’t want to sign up right away, they might find a post they really like and download the content upgrade.
Here’s how we provide more ways for our visitors to sign up for our email list:
Site-wide pop-up: When someone makes it 50% of the way down a page on our site, they see this pop-up:
“Join Us” button on the homepage: Every visitor who lands on our homepage is immediately presented with a call to action to join our list.
Grow And Convert currently sees a 4.26% conversion rate from visitor to email list subscriber.
We recently launched our first product as a live training workshop to 9 customers at $750 each.
The beta version was an 8-week program with 4 phone calls with us that walked through 4 modules with worksheets.
We didn’t tell our entire list about it, so we’re excited for the next steps and to open the program up to more people.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Having an email list has let us work for ourselves, which has been life changing!
Business-wise it means we can sell our workshops without doing just direct sales because we have access to thousands of marketers who appreciate our help and enjoy our work.

Online Marketing Strategy
The publicly available strategies on Videofruit's blog alone have helped us build a list of thousands of prospective customers (we have people from companies like PayPal and Salesforce Desk on our list) and beta test product ideas (this is transformative) without building out a giant product and launching it to crickets. With the beta testing method from a VF blog post, we were able to make over $6000 testing an early version of our training product that confirmed certain hypotheses, and, importantly, disproved others. So we totally pivoted the original product idea to something way more desirable for our audience.
