When I first started building my email list, I was working as a sales manager in the automotive industry. I’m still working here!
I asked some of my closest friends what they thought my strengths were and did a self-analysis. Through these exercises, I realized my strength and curiosity for storytelling.
That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of storytelling.
Fast-forward a year and a half and I’d built an email list of 2,072 subscribers.
I launched my first product, an online novel writing course, to a small group of subscribers and earned my first $1,582.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things: I posted in Facebook groups and guest blogged for sites in my industry.
As soon as I decided to build my email list, I started connecting with other authors and people in my industry. One of those people had a Facebook Group and offered to share a lead magnet about how to become a storyteller I had just finished up.
Here’s a picture of the page I would send traffic to from my Facebook Group outreach:
This earned me my first 20 subscribers.
Next I started guest blogging. After initially being rejected, a popular site in my industry accepted one of my blog posts.
Here’s a picture of that blog post:
This sent me 60 subscribers in the first hour alone of it being published.
Currently my list is at 2,072 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 2,072 subscribers by doing two things: 1) sharing on social media, and 2) guest blogging.
One of the best things I’ve done was ask people to share my articles.
I added share buttons to my free downloads along with pre-made verbiage so that the sharing was as effective as possible.
I also added share buttons to my freebie download page after learning that one of the best times to ask people to share is when they’re most excited about you and have just opted in.
I primarily focused on the bloggers who were somewhat known in my niche. I started building relationships early by leaving comments on all the sites I wanted to eventually guest post on. That way, my name wouldn’t be new when I asked.
Here’s are a few of my favorite guest posts:
Each time I landed a guest post, I added their logos to my landing page as social proof.
I recently offered my first product to a small part of my email list. This product is the first version of a bigger course I’m working on called “Fast Draft Course.”
I immediately had 16 signups, earning me my first $1,582!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
For years, I knew I was supposed to be writing and leading people. While I’m busier than I’ve ever, I no longer feel like my soul is being crushed, because now I’m living my purpose and doing what I can to reach my dreams.
Seeing my message connect with more people every day and begin to snowball shows me that I’m meant to do this. I was right. I can help people.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
Wife + 2 Kids + Golden-Doodle
Videofruit showed me how to share like a pro. I invited folks to share on my landing page, inside my freebie and inside most posts. I learned not to be afraid to ask for a share... or a sale. Just bring people value and don't be afraid to ask those people to share that value.
