When I first started building my email list, I was working for creative advertising agencies where I learned the ins and outs of marketing to help companies grow. After over a decade of doing this, I became disenchanted with the grind and crazy hours. I decided I wanted more freedom in my life.
That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of startup marketing strategy.
I picked that because I’ve been around marketing from a young age, watching my father, and because many startups were seeking the strategies I offer.
Fast-forward 7 months and I’d built an email list of 1,057 subscribers.
Now I’m offering products as an affiliate and focused on helping my private clients grow and be acquired.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 and 1,000 subscribers by doing 1 thing: I reached out manually to everyone I know in my network.
When you’re first getting started building your email list, a lot of resources tell you conflicting information. You’ll feel like you need a website, activity on every social media platform, and products ready to offer.
That’s just not true.
That’s why I looked to the people who already know and love me to enlist their support.
I dug through my contacts and email inbox one by one and found that I had three segments in my network.
Segment #1: Existing contact list. This was built with friends, family members, and colleagues from my previous career.
Segment #2: Online directories of which I’m a member where industry professionals connect.
Segment #3: LinkedIn. I downloaded my contacts from LinkedIn and reached out to everyone on that list.
For each segment I would send 50-100 emails at a time each day, to be as efficient as possible and to make each email personalized.
Here’s an example of what I sent out:
Currently my list is at 1,382 subscribers.
Since I’ve built my list, I’m now starting to focus on products and services of my own that I can offer. To date I’ve only sent out offers for affiliate programs of other courses and products that I enjoy.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Building an email list gave me the confidence I needed to leave my day job and to focus solely on my own business.
