When I first started building my email list I was a youth pastor and attending grad school. I kept asking myself, “What should I do with my life?” I loved that question, so I started focusing my studies around it.
After grad school I started working one-on-one with people to help them discover their calling. I realized I wanted to create an online component of my business.
That’s when I decided to build an email list around the topic of finding your life’s work.
Fast-forward three years and I’d built a list of 2,375 subscribers.
I earned $1,988 after my first product launch!
How did you do it?
My first 100 subscribers came rather quickly for me by doing two things. I created a free mini-course to help people find their callings and announced it on social media.
*Hot of the press!* the brand new FREE mini-course, 5 Clues to Your Calling. Get it here and share the love: https://t.co/zh19py8WmV

Here’s what my landing page for the course looked like:
Most of the people who joined were family, friends, and other online connections.
I’m still getting opt-ins from this every day and I’ve earned 429 total subscribers from this mini-course.
Currently my list is at 2,375 subscribers.
Besides my mini-course, two things have continued to help build my list: 1) guest posting, and 2) The 1-Day Business Breakthrough Podcast.
I went crazy guest posting on a ton of sites in my industry but only got a handful of subscribers.
Here are a few sites I’ve been featured on:
Guest posting can be hard to track, because every time one of my posts gets published on a big site, my search engine rankings go up, which impacts how I’m found via Google.
I estimate that around 1,000 of my total opt-ins have come in some way as a result of guest posting.
In January 2015 I noticed Pat Flynn and Chris Ducker were launching a new podcast designed to help one listener at time, called 1-Day Business Breakthrough. I submitted my question and was excited to find out that I was picked to be the “hot seat” on episode 6!
This led to 70 subscribers very early on in my journey.
I recently launched a podcast of my own called The Meaning Movement and I couldn’t be more excited!
Here’s what it currently looks like in iTunes:
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
List building has allowed me to turn something I am really passionate about into a business. I wouldn’t be able to give my time to this project without it— which is a real gift!

Before Videofriut I knew I needed to level-up my business and reach a wider audience, but I felt stuck. I'd spent three years growing a small list — it was taking way too long. Videofruit gave me a plan of action that really changed things for me! Now my business is growing and I'm excited for what's ahead.
