When I first started building my list, I had been a full-time wedding photographer for over 8 years.
My photography business became successful in a short period of time, mostly because I understood how to use the internet to get new clients. I found that most photographers didn’t understand the online marketing lingo.
That’s when I decided to start an email list, translating the best online marketing plans and ideas into language that photographers can understand.
Fast-forward one year (from May 2015), and my email list had grown from zero to 1,024 subscribers.
I recently opened a beta SEO course with a private Facebook group, with total revenue around $600 a month right now.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things.
First, I reached out to my personal network, one by one, and got my first 39 subscribers.
Second, I did a live speaking engagement on marketing and SEO for photographers at a small local photography convention and got 62 more subscribers. Over 90% of the audience gave me their email addresses.
Now (May 2016), my list has grown to 1,024 subscribers by me doing 4 specific things: 1) giveaways; 2) joint webinars; 3) content upgrades; and 4) a blogging video course.
Giveaways are a great way to kick-off your list-building. I gave away a “Done-for-you SEO Package” valued at $700. This giveaway cost me $300 after some light negotiation and brought in 364 subscribers.
If you want to grow your audience, you have to provide helpful topics that they’ll want to sign up for. My audience of photographers want to know how to run an online business successfully, so I found an SEO expert to do a joint webinar our audiences could sign up for.
This brought in 200 subscribers.
Since my market is new to running an online business, I knew they would be curious about hashtags, so I created a list of them and ways to find the perfect ones. This has already brought in 100 subscribers and a few new ones each week since people are searching for “hashtags for wedding photographers.”
Blogging Video Course
Free courses are an easy method to get your website visitors thinking, “This is for me!” That’s what sparked the idea for my “Focus On Blogging” course. My friend (and now partner in my business) Ben was featured on a photography podcast and he mentioned our course, which led to 114 new subscribers, and more coming in every day.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I finally have a focus for my business, and the clarity has allowed me to stay motivated and make progress.
I was starting to get really stressed because I had no clarity and didn’t know how I would ever build something that would produce an income that could support my family.
Because of a growing list, I have confidence that people like my content and are willing to pay for the right products.
Now I just have to create the right products and services and the audience is ready to listen!
What’s next for you?
I’ll be spending all of my time focused on 3 things:
Wife + 2 Daughters + 1 Son
Online Marketing For Photographers
Full-time Wedding Photographer
I loved that Videofruit covers the mechanics of the launching in so much detail. Honestly, there are paid courses out there that didn't have nearly the levels of specifics that Videofruit posts’ had.
