When I first started building my list, I was a professional artist and art instructor. A few years ago I picked up a set of Copic Marker fine art markers and was hooked.
Soon people began to ask how I used these markers and wondered if they could do the same.
That’s when my girlfriend and I decided to build an email list around marker tutorials.
Fast-forward 9 months and we’ve built an email list of 71,296 subscribers!
Now we’re testing multiple products with our list to figure out the best product to sell and how best to help the list.
How did you do it?
We got our first 100 subscribers by doing two things.
First, we reached out to our personal network and asked if they’d like to hear about our journey as we built a newsletter about marker tutorials.
Second, we joined several related Facebook groups. The groups were interesting. If we spent time and effort in those groups we could add 10 to 20 new subs per week on cue.
Currently our list is at 71,296 subscribers.
We went from 100 to 71,296 subscribers by focusing primarily on one thing: giveaways.
We grew quickly as a result of hosting a giveaway and creating an in-depth plan to follow along the way.
The plan looked like this:
Step #1: Offer a high-value prize of KNOWN value. The prize we offered was a $400 set of markers.
Our audience knew the price and value of these markers. This was a big key to our success.
Here was the reaction on social media to our giveaway:
Step #2: Establish authority in relevant Facebook groups. Luckily we were active in multiple groups before launching the giveaway. This was critical because the community and admins were familiar with us and wanted to share our giveaway.
Step #3: Launch the giveaway during a live event. By launching to a live group of excited enthusiasts, we were able to get immediate shares across multiple social platforms. With over 700 people entering and sharing within the first hour of the giveaway, we went viral very quickly.
The giveaway had over 150,000 contestants total and added 78,369 subscribers to our list.
Here’s a screenshot of our dashboard a few days before the giveaway ended:
At one point we were adding 10,000 new subscribers per day! We actually had to slow it down.

What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Artists rely on commissions so you’re always working to find that next “deal.” It’s either feast or famine.
Building a email list has felt like an added layer of security, and I’m starting to test products to my subscribers to see what they’ll value.
We’re in the middle launching the Color Academy Ink, a recurring membership product, and have already done $2,360.02 in initial revenue which equals over $17,000 per year at this point (June 2016).
Here’s a recent Facebook post promoting the product:
We’ll keep you updated on how things turn out!
