When I first started building my list, I was working as an architect. While in college, I was exposed on the online world when I built my first e-commerce site and I did some freelance work on the side.
After 5 years of architecture, I wanted to pursue a career that involved websites and online marketing. In 2009 I was hired to be on the digital marketing team of a publicly traded company.
In July 2015 I went out to find clients of my own, and that’s when I decided to start building an email list around the topic of social media automation.
Fast-forward one year and I’ve been able to grow an email list of 1,152 subscribers.
Now I’m completely on my own and working on my first software product to help business owners manage their social media.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: leveraging Twitter.
I scheduled tweets that went out a few times a day over the course of a few months. The tweets sent users to a content piece that also mentioned an idea I had for social media management software and asked for their email address to learn more.
Here’s an example of one of those automated tweets:
And this is what the page looked like:
This helped me a) build my email list, and b) validate the product I was working on.
Currently my list is at 1,152 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,152 subscribers by doing two things: 1) reaching out to my personal network, and 2) giveaways.
I learned about building a list of Eager Sneezers after joining Videofruit’s list-building course, “Get 10,000 Subscribers“.
Eager Sneezers are essentially the people who will tell all of their friends about what you are doing and help you reach a massive supply of people who are so interested in what you offer that they’ll buy.
This quickly added 111 subscribers to my list.
Giveaways are a fun way to build your list because it’s exciting for those participating.
My goal was to create a giveaway that my target audience would love. Since my market is looking for help with automating social media, I decided to give away a social media scheduling app called Buffer.
Here’s a picture of my giveaway page after it ended:
This alone added 240 subscribers to my list.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It has allowed me to be surrounded with people who share the same passion I have for social media. It’s a great feeling!
As I’m getting ready to launch my next projects, I take pride in knowing that I’ve already built the right crowd of people who will enjoy them.
What are you excited about?
Right now I’m working on a software project called Bulk.ly that keeps you from ever running out of content to post to social media. I’ve noticed that people don’t have the time to queue up posts consistently, so I decided to create a solution.
Here’s what my launch page currently looks like:
You set it up once, and that’s it! You’ll never run out of content on your social profiles again.
What excites me most is that I now have an audience of people who are a perfect fit for this and are already asking me when it’s going to be available.
Going forward I’ll be focused on 3 things:
Wife + 2 Daughters + 1 Dog
Social Media Automation
I knew that list-building is critical to launching the product I’m in the middle of creating. However, I needed a plan that would allow me to follow step-by-step. Videofruit gave me that plan I was looking for and allowed me to have time to work on my product launch.
