When I first started building my list, I was an architect in New York City.
I was working 80 hours a week and realized that it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Unfortunately I came to that realization after spending 6 years getting my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. 🙁
Because I was short on time in my job, I became infatuated with productivity and time management, and I wanted to help others with what I discovered.
That’s when I decided to start building an email list.
Fast-forward a few months and my business partner and I had grown my list to 3,250 subscribers by sharing what we learned about productivity.
We eventually launched our first Kickstarter campaign that took all of our findings and put it into an easy-to-follow book for entrepreneurs. The Kickstarter earned $322,696!
How did you do it?
We got our first 100 subscribers by personally reaching out to friends to see if they were interested in learning more about time management.
We also leveraged the “Email Signature Technique” that we learned from Videofruit in every email and put up a landing page for our product, which got a few hundred more subscribers.
Then we went from 100 to 3,250 subscribers using two primary techniques: 1) giveaways; and 2) the “Medium Hack.”
The product we created for Kickstarter was a daily planner to help structure your day, so we wanted to use a giveaway to attract people who would enjoy that product to become subscribers.
Creating a successful giveaway that goes “viral” means that you have to go all out, so we researched other items our target audience was talking about and created a bundle of the most popular productivity tools.
We launched our giveaway and gained 1,755 emails total.
A few factors made this successful.
First, we leveraged the small list of family and friends who first signed up for our email list when we were still just an idea and asked them to share.
Second, we used BuzzSumo to research influencers who talked about productivity in the last 6 months and manually reached out to all of them.
The “Medium Hack”
I found the site Medium a few weeks before our big launch, and it seemed like a great place to share our content.
I repurposed an existing blog post for Medium and included a call to action for the content upgrade.
This ended up being our most successful strategy for building the list as well as for helping fund our Kickstarter project.
We earned 509 email opt-ins from that one post!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I went from burned out and not knowing what to do next, to now working from home full-time in my business.
It’s an amazing feeling!
What’s next for you?
Since we did our first Kickstarter campaign we’ve grown from 3,250 subscribers to 42,251!
Now I’m excited to be building a Kickstarter course teaching people how to get “From Zero to Funded” and sharing articles on my personal blog LittleMight. After 3 successful Kickstarter projects, we’ve raised over $500K!
With my additional time, I’ll be focusing on continuing to grow my email list and relaunching twice during this next year.
We’re spending all of our time focused on three things:
I’m proud to say I have my time and life back!
Husband + One Dog
I did it... and so can you. It wasn't until I started focusing on list-building and using the strategies Videofruit taught me that things actually started to happen. Thanks Videofruit!
