When I first started building my email list, I owned my own business. I actually ended up selling it a few months ago because of my email list!
I started following a few online marketers in various niches, and seeing what the power of a huge and responsive list could be made the concept a no-brainer.
Plus, hardly anyone in retail was doing this well, so I knew it could give us a massive advantage. (It did.) I also knew this would be an investment in my future desired “next” business, by teaching me the skills needed to succeed in the online world.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around my business, sports nutrition.
Fast-forward 26 months and I had built an email list of 8,697 subscribers.
In September 2016, I sold my business!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: signing up customers in-store.
We signed up customers in-store through our point-of-sale system for joining our loyalty program.
People came into our physical store locations and signed up! This was something we kept doing, so this helped grow our list beyond the first 100.
When I sold my business, my subscriber was list at 8,697 email subscribers.
I went from 100 to 8,697 email subscribers by doing one thing: giveaways.
Giveaways gave massive boosts.
Our 1st one gave us 400.
I went back and dug deeper on how Videofruit was doing them, and re-thought the process. Our 2nd giveaway added 1,825 subs to our list!
These giveaways were huge in growing our list!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I finally felt like I could be fully and deeply present with my family on vacations, without feeling like my business was going to suffer for it.
From a purely business standpoint, it allowed me to grow revenue and profit anywhere, any time, which was one of the keys in making my business scalable/salable, and pulling in the best buyers so I could sell and move into my passion project.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on one thing:
Me + Wife + Twin Daughters
For the past 3 years, I knew I wanted to transition out of my current business, and start a new one. When I finally started to not only utilize my email list, but grow it dramatically, it completely changed how we sold, how much we sold. We grew our profit so much, that I was finally able to "quit my business" by catching the attention of some amazing buyers. I finally sold my business and started a new one in a field I love, learning and teaching what I'm passionate about, to an audience that's hungry for action.
