When I first started building my list I was a successful hedge fund manager, having founded Hartwood Capital in 2012.
I was wearing all the hats in my business (customer relationships and service, trading, negotiating, research, accounting, newsletters, etc.), so by 2014 I was burned out.
I had satisfied my ego and made some money, but I felt it was time to grow an audience and a movement to contribute to the world in a bigger way.
That’s when I decided to build an email list on the topic of productivity, entrepreneurship, and finance. I picked that topic because I feel that many entrepreneurs are lacking a distinct set of skills I learned as a hedge fund manager.
Fast-forward one year (to May 2016) and I had built my email list to1,094 subscribers.
Since then I’ve launched my first course as a beta and have earned $9,865 in revenue.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things.
First, I started talking to my friends, family and Facebook contacts by offering them a “Productivity Hacks Cheat Sheet.” That download is still my best content giveaway.
Currently my list has 1,129 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 1,129 by primarily focusing on two things: 1) content upgrades; and 2) podcast interviews.
I found that by using content upgrades in my posts, I’m able to get dozens of readers immediately subscribing and hundreds of leads over time. After getting positive feedback from my network, I used the “Productivity Hacks Cheat Sheet” as a content upgrade on this post.
To date, that cheat sheet has been downloaded 589 times–not including me giving it out to over one hundred people as I was getting started.
I started experimenting with being interviewed on podcasts in the entrepreneur space after being an avid listener myself.
Podcasts are great because they get you in front of an entirely new audience in a simple way: having a conversation with the host.To date, I’ve been a guest on 5 podcasts and have even had one listener invest in my $15,000 coaching package after hearing me as a guest.
In every episode, I send listeners to a page like this that includes resource links to anything I mentioned while on the show.
My favorite interview to date was one I did on Rich20Something.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I’ve always wanted to know how to spread my message to the world.
Now I feel like I know exactly how to cultivate an audience that wants to hear what I have to say. These days I’m linking with a lot of top names in my space to partner with them on courses and different ways to bring value to entrepreneurs everywhere.
What’s next for you?
My course just launched into beta with 25 students, and I’ve partnered with the some of the best marketers in the world in various niches.
I’m excited to see where this project goes–we’re just getting real traction in the marketplace.
I’ll be spending all of my time focused on two things:
I’m currently in Spain. So I’m off to enjoy the little things 🙂 ¡Adios!
