When I first started building my email list, I was working for a real estate company. I’m still working there while I grow my own business.
I’d been struggling with another business I started last year, and just couldn’t grow my list. Through other business coaching, I knew I needed a list, but I didn’t know how to go about actually getting the right people to give me their email addresses.
When I saw one of Videofruit’s videos talking about putting the product before getting the list, it was like a light bulb went on. I knew this was the piece I was missing.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of DIY and arts and crafts. I love DIY and how-tos. I am very creative and I love doing all sorts of projects. I figured that I could share my projects with other people, and they would be inspired to do projects themselves.
Fast-forward 13 months and I had built an email list of 2,123 subscribers.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: asking my friends and family to join my list!
I started with a simple email to Facebook friends and my family members.
I messaged each of them and said, “Hey there, I’m starting an arts and crafts newsletter. Would you like to be on my list for when it is ready?” I got almost all yeses and 2 nos. I didn’t hear back from some people. That got me to almost 100. All of my relatives subscribed!
I then emailed the exact same question to my customers from the past 6 months. Almost all of my customers joined in: I didn’t hear back from a couple and one said no.
That took me to 172 subscribers!
Currently my list is at 2,123.
I went from 172 to 2,123 subscribers by doing 1 thing: a giveaway
Since my topic is arts and crafts, I wanted to come up with a giveaway that would really intrigue people!
I chose a $150 Jo-Ann store gift card. I knew this would really attract the audience I wanted.
I started it on 11/ 7 and ended it on 11/19. The giveaway added 1978 subscribers!!! What a HUGE boost!!
I also posted my giveaway on Pinterest to help boost the amount of people who signed up!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
I’ve been able to breathe because I found something that actually works, so that’s pretty personal. One business thing, other than growing my list, is allowing me to be confident that my subscription box will sell well.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
Me + Husband + 3 Children
Arts and Crafts
Admin at Real Estate Company
I have been making products and trying to sell them for the past 2 years. I've sold a few things, but nothing where I can quit my day job! I had a simple signup popup with a coupon code on my website and gathered a few emails, but nothing like this. The list before the product philosophy totally resonated with me, and makes so much sense. I have done each lesson, step by step, with awesome results.
