When I first started building my email list, I was a director of marketing focusing on user acquisition and customer growth for a company.
Even though I loved my job, I wanted to create a place of my own where people loved to work.
When live-streaming apps like Periscope, Blab, and Meerkat came onto the scene, I knew they would be big. That’s when I started experimenting with live streaming and sharing what I was learning along the way.
Fast-forward 5 months and I’d built a list of 2,393 subscribers.
I recently launched my first product and earned $530. I’m now tweaking it for a relaunch.
Revenue from consulting with private clients has been $30,000 over the last twelve months!
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing two things. I reached out to my network and started sharing my lead magnet with live streaming.
My first 32 subscribers came from reaching out to my contacts via Facebook Messenger.
Here’s what that sounded like:
Me: “Hey Bryan, I started a newsletter around the topic of live-streaming and think you’d like it! Wanna join?”
Bryan: “Alessandra, great to hear from you! Of course!”
Me: “Great, what’s your best email?”
From the beginning I had a workbook as a lead magnet so I could offer it for joining my list. 62 other subscribers joined after using sites like Blab (before it shut down).
Once, I mentioned my live video workbook and put the link in the comments, and I immediately had 20 new subscribers. It was such a powerful moment for me.
Currently my list is at 2,393 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 2,393 subscribers by doing two things: 1) live streaming, and 2) giveaways.
Using Periscope has been key to growing my email list. Just like other social media platforms, there is now a way to have viewers opt-in for your email list inside the app. I continued to push the lead magnet during my broadcasts to grow my list.

Combining live streaming and mentioning my lead magnet, I’ve earned 150 total subscribers.
The first time I did a giveaway, it performed terribly. From that first giveaway, I only got 16 subscribers. It was so frustrating because I spent time getting multiple prizes and promoting it like crazy on social media.
This is what my giveaway page looked like:
Before my physical product launch I decided to dust myself off and try again.
This time around, the giveaway was a massive success! It added a total of 2,200 subscribers to my list. The key takeaway was that it was simple to understand and the prize was a perfect fit for my target audience.
Here’s a picture of that giveaway:
My first product launch did $530 in sales. I’m now in the process of re-strategizing to launch it again.
My next product, Empire Planner, has sprouted from the need to have a planner that fits my needs. This planner was designed for women with businesses who are wanting a space to organize and structure their time.
Right now I’m launching it on Kickstarter:
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Building my list has given me the confidence that I have a competitive advantage and leverage in my business. This gives me peace of mind instead of making me feel like I’m behind.
I know that with the right launch I can monetize my list significantly and get early feedback as I build my next product.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:

Videofruit is entirely responsible for my list. The spark for seriously wanting to build my list started to grow as I read all the incredible blog posts on Videofruit. After I joined Get 10,000 Subscribers, I knew it was time to commit to building my list. I started at 0 subscribers at the beginning of the course and now have 2,393 subscribers.
