When I first started building my list I was running my financial entity that’s still going till this day.
I had a very popular blog in 2009 about the Middle East (written while I was living in Yemen), and after I closed it down, I realized I had no way of staying in touch with all the folks who had visited the website on a regular basis. Years later I started another blog and made the same mistake.
Then I read about email marketing and the power it had.
That’s when I decided to start building my email list. I really like helping other people’s businesses and creating long term relationships. Podcasting is a great way to spread the word about people who have amazing projects, and a great way to build relationships.
Fast-forward 11 months and I had built my list from 0 to 1,220 subscribers.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing.
I reached out to friends and family via Facebook messenger and email.
I asked my 2,500 Facebook friends for their email, and explained to them why I was asking for it (purpose of the podcast, etc). I got 350 subscribers that way.
I then asked my wife to go to her Facebook friends and do the same with her 2,000 friends. We got around 200 more. The other 50 I got through my parents’ friends (people who knew me). It was a powerful start.
This strategy got me my first 600 subscribers in one month.
Currently my list is at 1,220 subscribers.
I went from 600 to 1,220 subscribers by doing one thing: posting my podcast on social media.
I post one new podcast each week from a long-format interview I conducted with either entrepreneurs, creatives and visionaries
Here’s an image of one of those shares on Facebook:
When you click on the story, it takes you to my website, where you can listen to the podcast.
This strategy has brought me in 620 subscribers just by posting once a week.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It has definitely increased my scope of influence and opened up new opportunities. I was designated recently as the director of Startup Grind Santo Domingo, and a big reason I got the opportunity to manage such an exciting brand was the podcast and the email list I currently manage.
What’s next for you?
Moving forward means focusing on three things:
me + Wife + 2 kids

Videofruit has been a major inspirations to pursue this path. They are givers, roadmaps, and the people you want guiding you through those dark days when you think your project is going nowhere. I sincerely believe that with the strategies I have already learned from them (which I will soon start implementing), my number of subscribers will 10x in no time. Thank you Videofruit for believing in yourselves, and in your audience. We owe you so much.
