When I first started building my email list, I was working as a public health consultant, where I am still.
I had experienced nonprofit burnout, which led to me not being as healthy as I knew I could be.
I began focusing on getting healthy and sharing what I was learning with others.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of self-care.
Fast-forward 18 months and I had built an email list of 1,632 subscribers.
I’ve launched a couple of different things in the past 18 months:
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing three things: emailing my friends, emailing my family, and collecting email addresses at speaking engagements
When I first started, I reached out to friends and family and asked them to join my list.
I also went to a few different speaking engagements about self-care. I then approached people who attended and ask them if they were interested in joining my list.
This got me 104 subscribers.
Currently my list is at 1,632 subscribers.
I went from 104 to 1,632 subscribers by doing 2 things: 1) hosting promotions, and 2) running Facebook ads.
In December 2015, I was featured on a blog with a big following. It was a great opportunity, but my list didn’t grow after I was featured.
I couldn’t understand why this was happening. I looked in a theme update and my email list plug-in wasn’t there. I was quite sad that I had missed an opportunity to grow my list.
Then I had an epiphany that I could use Facebook ads to advertise directly to people who follow Beth. It worked like a charm! I spent $200 and grew my list to about 375.
In May 2016, I joined a mastermind group. One of the bonuses of joining was getting to share a monthly Facebook promo with the group’s followers.
I created a lead magnet and opt-in for it.
Each time I was promoted, I got 200 to 300 new subscribers, which took me to 1400.
Here’s one of the promotions:
I then decided to create my own Facebook ads and target people who were interested in self-care and making themselves happier and healthier.
The ad would take them to the same opt-in I used on Happy Black Woman Facebook page.
This got me up to 1,632 subscribers!
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
It’s given me an outlet for my ideas and given me a way to serve and earn an income at the same time.
What’s next for you?
I’m spending all of my time focused on three things:
Me + Husband + Dog
Public Health Consultant (Current Job)
At some point I ran across the list goal app. So that really helped me stay focused. Whenever I opened my browser it was a great reminder to work on list building. Now I just started the 10ksubs program and the process of writing daily and posting weekly is really helpful.
