When I first started building my email list, I was working for a Fortune 500 company as a media relations representative. I had been blogging about wedding photography for about five years, but I hadn’t started building my email list yet.
It was becoming more difficult to reach my financial goals, and reaching my audience was becoming really difficult as the world of social media grew more and more noisy.
That’s when I decided to start an email list around the topic of wedding photography education.
The reason I chose that was because I love teaching! Wedding photography is my profession and I’ve always been an open book about it, so sharing what I’ve learned and what I’m learning comes naturally to me.
Fast-forward one year and I had built an email list of 2,555 subscribers.
In January 2016 I launched my online course, “A Practical Wedding Workshop LIVE,” and had 68 full registrations, grossing a total of $28,987.
How did you do it?
I got my first 100 subscribers by doing one thing: asking my current visitors to subscribe.
I was already blogging and had grown an audience that was following my journey when I finally decided to ask them to join my list in June 2015.
Here’s a screenshot of the post in which I announced my newsletter:
Sometimes getting more subscribers is as easy as letting your audience know and asking them to join!
Currently my email list is at 2,555 subscribers.
I went from 100 to 2,555 subscribers by doing 2 things: 1) content upgrades, and 2) free lessons.
The first few months, list growth was slow because my only way to get new subscribers was if someone happened to be on my blog and entered their email address into the pop-up box.
My pop-up box now offers this free guide as an incentive to join my newsletter:
In November 2015 we tried our first content upgrade as a simple PDF that was a compilation of a few blog posts put together in a Photoshop template.
That gained us 483 new subscribers over the course of a month.
Here’s a screenshot of that post:
I had the idea to start offering free lessons to my audience so that I could build momentum leading up to a free live workshop I wanted to offer called “A Practical Wedding Workshop LIVE.”
These free lessons created a new reason to join my list every time I published a new one.
Here’s a recent example of the free lessons I’ve been offering:
I just got done relaunching my live workshop and have added a total of 1,149 new subscribers to my list.
What has building an email list changed in your life and allowed you to do?
Because our first online workshop launch was such a success, my husband was able to leave his desk job in April to come on as my full-time business partner!
Having the additional financial flexibility that the email list and launch provided gives us the ability to spend more time together building a life we love, and it allows us to more directly influence our audience.
Because Matt left his job April 1st, we had the flexibility to book him a last-minute ticket to accompany me to Paris for a few photo shoots. So I’d count that as a win 🙂
What’s next for you?
We’re spending all of our time focused on three things:
Husband and 2 dogs
Media Relations Representative
I struggled along for years without an email list and could never understand why it was SO HARD to be heard among the sea of others in my industry. After we finally started our list, I stumbled upon one of the Videofruit webinars and it opened my eyes to just how much value lies in stewarding your subs well, and it made an incredible difference in our earnings. My husband was able to leave his desk job, and we're loving doing life together as a result!
