Want to get an expert to write on your blog? Do this

You are sitting down to write an article for your…(let’s say)…workout blog called “The Diaries of a Weak Middle Class White Guy.”

…and like any good procrastinating writer you check your email before you get started.

and BAM!

In your inbox is a personal email from CrossFit GOD Rich Froning…

The post that you were starting to write is entitled “10 Workouts That Take Less Than 10 Minutes.”

…and to your utter surprise Rich (the top Crossfit athlete in the world) sent you an email with 3 of his favorite workouts that take less than 10 minutes.

What are the odds, right?

Then it happens again. Samantha Briggs (the top female CrossFit athlete in the world) emails you with 3 of her top workouts as well.

Your mind is blown.

Which article do you think will get more traffic and mentions?

The lame article you were about to write OR the one supported by two of the top experts in your space.

Easy answer.

Today, I’m going to show you exactly how to make email magically appear in your inbox from the top experts in your field.

Yesterday I ran across a little nugget of wisdom from one of the most active guest bloggers in the online marketing world, Kristi Hines.

She writes for KISSmetrics, Social Media Examiner, Quicksprout and on an on…

So, I watch what she does pretty closely and yesterday she sent out a tweet that really caught my attention.

Pretty normal looking right?

There’s an ingenious strategy at play that you need to notice and copy.

Let’s break down exactly what’s going on

1. She is writing an article for Viewbix on the “Top Video Marketing Tips for 2014.”

2. To build credibility and traffic to the article she asked James Wedmore and Gideon Shalwick to contribute to the article (they are two of the top experts in this space).

3. She made it extremely easy for them to contribute by linking them directly to a Google Form where they could share their advice for her readers.

No emailing or tweeting back. Just click and submit.

4. Kristi will then compile their feedback into one cohesive article for ViewBix. They do the writing and she does the editing.

Which article do you think would do better?

Option A: The article that Kristi (not a video expert) writes based on observation and her limited expertise in the field

Option B: The article that includes techniques and advice from James and Gideon (top two experts in the field)

Obviously Option B. They carry a built in credibility from years of experience. They also bring with them TRAFFIC.

Often times these experts will share an article they have contributed to with their audience in the form of a tweet, Facebook update or even (in some rare cases) an email to their list. This sends a fresh influx of traffic to Option B articles.

Want to try this yourself?

Here is how you can implement this in your business

Step 1: Create your “Expert Spreadsheet”

Make a spreadsheet with three columns. Label them like so…

  • Column #1: Expert
  • Column #2: Twitter Handle
  • Column #3: Email Address

Step 2: Make a list of your experts

If you don’t know who the experts are, Google the topic. I’m writing a series of posts on building your email list.

A quick search of the keyword phrase “List Building” produced 10 articles, all written by experts in the field.

Step 3: Record their Twitter handle and Email address in your spreadsheet

Tip: An easy way to find an email address is to sign up for their email list. Most of the time the email they are sending from is one that they regularly check.

For more tips on finding email addresses, read this in depth article.

Step 3: Create your Form

Create a Google Form with the exact same question structure that Kristi used in the above example

Step 4: Contact your list of experts

Send a tweet an email using Kristi’s script and ask them to contribute. Start with a Tweet then – if there is no response – move to email.

Step 5: Let them know it is finished

Once you have written the article, notify them that the article is published so they can share with their audience

Step 6: Compile the responses into one cohesive article
