5 fatal mistakes to avoid when building your list

The only mistake you can’t learn and recover from is a fatal one.

On my journey from 0 to 10,000 subscribers, I discovered 5 fatal mistakes. Things you HAVE TO AVOID at all costs if you’re going to reach your goal of growing an email list.

Mistake #1: Basing your entire business off of blog posts and podcasts

Most “experts” will teach you to build your business by mapping out a gigantic 75-page business plan and then executing each step of it.

As entrepreneurs, we know that’s a silly way to go about it.

It sounds nice and warm and cuddly. But’s it’s completely ignorant of the way business actually works.

But one of the biggest problems I see us making is swinging to the other end of the spectrum.

We take “lean startup” to mean “You don’t need a plan; you can figure out everything as you go.”

This is just as silly.

Deriving 100% of your strategy and business acumen from blog posts and podcasts is like becoming a doctor by reading WebMD articles.

There is a better way. A more efficient and thorough way to learn what you need to know.

You HAVE to have a guide.

Mistake #2: Not knowing how to make money from the list

Now that you have a list, what do you do with it?

You’d be shocked how many time this happens.

Someone spends months (years even), builds up a solid list of 5,000 to 10,000 subscribers and then….

Nothing.

They have no idea what to do next.

Instead of using that list to discover exactly what their readers want, then creating and launching that product, they flounder.

The truth is you don’t need 100,000 readers to create a sustainable income.

You don’t have to have a gigantic email list to make extremely good money online. I always thought that to have a $10,000 launch I needed 10s of thousands of people on my list.

But that’s just not true.
